It contains special chemicals that fight off infections that could hurt the skin inside the ear canal. Second, it acts as a shield between the outside world and the eardrum. When dust, dirt, and other things enter your ear, the earwax traps them so they can't travel any further

Well, the common Joe may try and tell you that it's a barrier between the complex inner ear and germs from the outside world. Don't believe it.
There are actually tiny candlemakers that work day and night inside your ears, and then ship out globally to the big names. Underpaid and underprivileged, but hey, someone has to take the job. Occasionally, depending on the quality of your candlemaker and how often you swab (pure disaster for your candlemaker) he may make a spill or two during his work. This wax eventually accumulates until it forms that which most average Joes call earwax.
Lol, I hope this load of nonsense entertained you a bit!

It's part of the body's self-cleaning mechanism. The ears are deep crevices into which matter does find its way. Ear wax is a secretion which aims at bringing that stuff out, like a conveyor belt. Think of it as your body's ear-cleaning mechanism. That we ourselves perceive ear wax as unclean is another matter. It's like having garbage bags standing in front of your house. Just get rid of them.
