I'm no inspector, but after many bored days in hotels, I have learned the following:
Holding the close button seems to have a better effect. This may simply be perception of it, but who knows.
Also, it will make the doors close faster. However, someone sticking their hand between the doors still overrides it.
Poking the call button repeatedly makes the elevator never come.
Okay, maybe not never, but a watched pot never boils.

It depends. In some cases, that button has been overridden to increase efficiency.
Like in the case of high-rise or busy buildings. If people were to manage to get into an elevator alone and then quickly press the button so that they could have it to themselves, it would be wasteful and inefficient.
I work in a 30 story building, and the close door buttons basically don't work. But in our parking structure they do.
I got this info from my husband, who was an elevator mechanic.

It depends on the elevator. There are countless of different brands and models.
From my experience, however, I think in most cases it's enough with pressing the button one single time.

I know what you mean Pulaski, I almost put a dent in my finger at times trying to get that elevator door shut. Goodluck on your Quest for knowledge of the unshutable elevator door.
