Yes of course. Were you just asking about the Coast Guard? They generally don't deploy aircraft mechanics to Iraq, but do have a few aircraft & cutters in the gulf. Army mechanics are part of aviation regiments & deploy with them for the year. Navy of course on ships. Marines deploy for shorter tours & also have their mechanics organic with aviation elements. Air Force is the best situation, they deploy as part of exeditionary air wings for 2-6 months... as the guy said they can fly across the world, so it's easy to rotate people in & out to keep them fresh & not put too much strain on families when it's not needed. The AF though is RIFing (laying off) a lot, i mean a WHOLE LOT, of people this year, so it may not be so easy to get the job you want or to keep from getting deployed or possibly going to longer deployments in line with the other services. No one knows yet. Of course aviation mechanics don't go outside the wire, but do have to dodge mortars.

A couple things I'd mention: First, why don't you look into Crew Chief ao you get both the mechanic qual & aircrew? Secondly, do you know the Army has a program to accept civilians directly from High School (or whatever) to Warrant Officer & Flight Training? It's not at all easy to get into, but I think pilot is better job than mechanic any day. To each their own though, just don't break my ride.

Well, since there are lots of aircraft in Iraq, it's a pretty good probablility that the mechanics who work on them are there too.

actually i would guess that the majority of them live in Kuwait since that is where most of the airplanes are.

helicopter mechanics probably have a much better chance of being sent directly into Iraq. but even so its not that bad. and any base big enough to have helicopters would be pretty big and nice.

probably has a burger king and everything!
