I cannot guess your age from your writing, which is very adult, but you sound like you're in your early teens from your relationship with your father. If adults asked questions like yours they would probably not engage in so much warfare.
Like all big decisions, going to war has many causes. Here in the US, different people supported the war for different reasons. Most of the public, and most politicians, believed the President's claim that Iraq was very close to developing nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. It had been a constant menace to its neighbors and the rest of the world, and it was under a brutal dictator, so they decided it was better to overthrow the government before it could cause a great catastrophe. That turns out to be untrue as we all know now, and many people wonder why the President was behind the war. Were the claims fake, or was he not thinking clearly?
Your father is right about the background. The reason people cared so much about Iraq and its weapons has to do with oil. Not just Iraq's oil, but oil from Kuwait, Iran, and other countries in the region. A few like Iran are already very much against the US. Others have pro-Western governments that are vulnerable to a popular uprising by a population that is increasingly anti-US and falling under the sway of Islamic fundamentalism. The President and his top advisors and supporters thought that if we made an example in Iraq of replacing an unpopular dictator with capitalism and democracy, the population would prosper and be grateful, and other countries would follow. They would be our friends and allies, and guarantee long-term military cooperation and oil supply for the US. Another big miscalculation.
Since we didn't win everyone's heats, some people still hope we can win through force. It is too early to know whether that will happen.
If oil supplies are disrupted the result is very dangerous and chaotic for the entire world. Oil is important for transportation, heating, food production, and it affects prices of other fuel sources that go into almost all aspects of life. International relations, diplomacy, wars are all about this kind of thing. War is never right -- it always involves a mistake or an unjustified action by one party or another. But it often has reasons, and competition over resources is probably the most common reason for modern wars.
America should have found alternatives to oil, and cut down on our consumption and dependence, a long time ago. But when it was cheap nobody had much of an incentive. It is a matter of planning ahead. One thing you learn about politics is that nobody ever makes decisions for the future unless it means votes or money today.
I know that's complicated but the issue is a complex one. This is just my opinion and other people have theirs. Hope this helps!

The war is not about oil. The war in Iraq is about changing the middle east by demonstrating that there is a better way to govern than by dictators, kings and mullahs.
And the reason nobody is in Darfur is because nobody is willing to send soldiers someplace where there is nothing that can be done.

Natural resources are a valid reason to go to war. It’s not just cars, but our entire economy and society. Without oil you would not be one your computer right now. Without our advanced technology we would be just like every other Middle Eastern country where more people would die each year in street violence than have died in both Iraqi wars.
I just wish the government would come out and say it instead of feeling guilty about wanting its people to succeed.

This war goes into the controled media catigory. They are reporting what they hear, and know. It goes into a power situation. George W, would have gotten elected no matter who voted. At the same time, he has an unuaual relationship with Iraquies. I have a high level of respect for men and women out there risking their lives. I dont see me or my neighbors out there. I personaly feel like the war is being faught for an unknown cause (not good) men and women are fighting for a president who cares nothing about you. US back here at home, or at lease me, really care about them with all our hearts. To answer your question, No, not even gold or diamonds are worth the risk.

im sure your dad is a smart guy but the idea that we are in Iraq for oil is just a conspiracy.
we are there for the security of America, Iraq, and to an extent the entire world. It has nothing to do with oil.
and remember, we have an all voulenteer military today. every single person chose to join the military. myself included.

Tell your Dad I said to study more. We get less than 3% of our oil from Iraq, most of our oil comes from Canada & we are not attacking them. My son is an Officier & he would take great offense at that statement. His men are not fighting for oil, it is an insult to them to say otherwise.

All war is about economics. Whoever controls the oil owns the world and all the wealth it contains.
