As we grow in this world of sorrow we develop a thicker skin, that is, we become either used to the pain, or to seeing the pain. Thats why compassion and empathy are traits attributed to good works.

Some things are so painful that we choose to bury them deep inside so as not to face them. It is amazing how great it feels to face something and have it over with. We only hurt ourselves when we bury a painful event.
