It's all a matter of semantics. Abram (who God renamed Abraham) had an illegitimate son named Ishmael with his wife's servant. Abram was 86 years old. Ishmael caused trouble between Abram and Sarai (later renamed Sarah by God) so Abram told Hagar to leave. God took care of Hagar and Ishmael became the father of all Arabs (Hagar was Egyptian & Abram was Iraqi).

After God changed Abraham & Sarah's names, he told them they would have a child. Abraham was 100 - Sarah was 90. Isaac was the product of God's promise.

So you can view this one of two ways:

1) Abraham had 2 sons - one by his wife & one out of wedlock

2) Prior to being chosen by God as the Father of all Nations, Abram had an illegitimate child. After he came to know God (at the age of 99 when God appeared to him) Abraham had a child. So you could literally say that even though it was the same man, he had one son when he was named Abram and the other was born when he was named Abraham. The other (and more important way, in my opinion) is that Ishmael was born to the pre-saved Abraham, but Isaac was born to the saved Abraham.

Abraham had many children, but only one was chosen to have the promised seed come through his line. That one was Isaac, son of Abraham's wife Sarah. It is through that line that the Messiah would come....not as complicated as you are trying to make it.
