My son, 20 months old, is considered medically fragile. I have quit working as a nurse to stay home and care for him. He is on an IV for 14 hours a day and is hospitalized occasionally for sepsis (infections) We want another child and we want him to have a sibling, but we are concerned that it might not be fair to anyone if we bring another life into our home because we're so busy with the first one. He's a lonely little boy and it breaks my heart, but I don't want to take time away from him for a new baby if he needs me. And I don't want to take time away from a new baby for him, if he needs me. It could work out fine, but there are no guarantees....

The short answer is that if you feel like you can handle the demands of both then why not. However, I wouldn't have a child for any reason other than the joy of motherhood, which you know all the good and bad of. I mean I wouldn't do it just to give my first a sibling as he is sure not to appreciate the gift for at least 20 years.

What are the chances that your second child could have the same illness as the first, and you will run yourself ragged trying to care for both?

And you need to be realistic about how you are able to care for a newborn and a very sick child. Can you afford to hire medical help, like a stop -in nurse to help with some of the IV procedures for your son, so that the time you spend with BOTH your children is quality time and not focused on sickness?? Do you have a strong support group to help you handle all the time management and emotional struggles you may have to deal with?

I think you already have your answer...you should wait to have another child. I have two kids ages 3 and 4...only 18 months apart, and trust me the older one does suffer because you can't be there like you were before the new baby came along. It's very hard, and you can barley devote enough attention to two children, let alone one child who is sick. maybe soon your son will be able to care for himself a little better, and then you will be able to have another child. Good luck with whichever way you decide to go!

It is a question of how much you want to have another baby. If there is a chance another baby could fall into the same medical problems as the first you must be ready to accept taking care of two babies with the same problems or you will not be ready to have another.

I wish your family the best in your endeavors.

I think you should have another one. It seems that you would welcome another child with all the love and attention he/she needs, just as you have for your first. Your son deserves his parents to be happy and to have the opportunity to have a sibling.
I think as long as you are capable of taking care of two, and as long as you are ready to have anohter, go for it.
Yes, another baby will take a little time from your son. But as long as you are giving your son all the love and care (including medical care of course) he needs, he will be fine.
Best of luck to your family. Whatever decision you make, it will be the right one for you.

If you're capable of caring for a second child, then more power to you. But if you're concerned about having another ill child, why don't you adopt?
