New technology makes things much smoother. Using transponders, air traffic controllers can monitor every plane in the sky and make sure there aren't any accidents, even at an airport as busy as O'Hare. The transitions between the different levels of flight are much smoother, using computerized controls and auto-pilot to make nice and easy turns, desents, climbs, etc. The benefit of the new technology to the passengers is less people dying.

There are excellent breakthroughs in Aviation:

Taxing is always manual and in conjunction with the control tower. After this the cockpit controls come into picture. Until recently the altimeter, airspeed, temperature, were all simple gages where the pilot used to monitor them one by one during take off and during the flight. Now all these instruments have been integrated and places in the shape of LCD panels. That's why now the aircrafts are said to have 'glass cockpit'. These have made a pilot's life much easier. All the information is available at a glance.

Further, the interefernce from the mobile phones has been reduced as they used to interfere the cockpit intruments. Chances are that in coming years you would be using mobile phones freely without any restrictions. However, the main issue will be security.

Broad band surfing, SMS is still possible. I did it recently on a KLM flight from Delhi to Paris. But you have to pay for that. It's available on the screens you use to watch movies.

Latest is the the wings are being made with carbon fibres reinforced plastics. This has reduced the weight and enhanced fuel savings by 15%!!
