Because he was an itinerant charismatic preacher, not an omnipotent God in human form.

Because it was not time for him to do so, he did all the walking around preaching God's kingdom, as the emissary of that kingdom, he was given the power by God to cure the sick, heal the lame, give sight to the blind. Raise the dead, these powers were given to him to prove to everyone that he had God's backing, so that people in later years could learn about the Kingdom and what it will be able to do for obedient mankind. Scripture that you can read about the kingdom are: Daniel 2:44, Psalms 2: 8, 9; Matthew 6: 9,10; Isaiah 2:4, Isaiah 65: 21,22,23; He is not "The God" he is the son of God - Scripture: Colossians 1:15 he is the first-born of creation, he was the first thing created by Jehovah God. Many Bibles have removed His name from scripture, Some call him Ad-do-ni, some call him Yahweh, Jehovah is the most accepted form of God's name there is: Some religions refer to it as the Tetragrammaton

Why just sickness? Why not just get rid of all of life's problems like "poof"!?
I could give a long detailed answer about the purpose of suffering, but I really don't have the time right now.
The short answer would be that Jesus healed the sick to prove to skeptics that he was from God. He didn't heal everyone because he was not here to remake the world -- at least not yet (even the people he healed got sick again eventually, as they aged, and died).

Jesus didn't do away with all illnesses because that wasn't his mission. Jesus came to save souls. He cured to show who he was (God), yet preached that life comes with suffering.
Jesus loves us and wants us to know that if we endure suffering with the mind of Christ, we can come closer to God. Those that suffer have an opportunity to lose their attachments to worldly things and see the Love that Christ has for us.
If everyone was cured of all illnesses and hunger, no one would see any reason to search for our creator because we will deceive ourselves into thinking we are our own god.
Obviously, a full examination of this issue can't be easily conveyed in a few lines.

Illness is part of the physical condition, like breaking a bone or getting a virus. Most of Jesus' healings were a sign of faith for the one being healed or for the witnesses to the healing. As long as we are in a physical body we will have illnesses and pain.

Simply because in our choice in life we choose thing that bring illness on. Some of the things we say, by just saying them it brings on what we say. Not everything is like that but some is.
If everything was taken away would we need him?
Then the real question is, what do you believe? If you don't what does it matter, you are just looking for a reason to deny him anyway. It really doesn't matter, He could have taken ever illness away and you still wouldn't believe.
It is in faith that one believes and if you don't care to believe, that's okay to.

Through illness comes the opportunity to witness. Jesus was doing His Father's will without question or hesitation.

Illness was not the point of His ministry. The point was that all the ills of Mankind--though we aren't very much, really--could be healed by applying to Him. Through His grace, our spiritual as well as physical ailments may be cured.
If we will ask.

Would healthcare companies rather cure diseases on a large scale or charge hefty fees on a per person basis? If diseases were cured they and He would have less to do and less reason to exist.

interesting question...Jesus said in a few places somthing along the lines of "your faith has healed you", and "as you have believed so be it done unto you"....he wasnt commanding magical powers, He was pointing out that the combination of the spiritual gift of faith that everyone has inherently, and a belief in who He was as the Son of God is what healed them....in other words Jesus didnt just slap them on the butt and say ur healed....it had alot to do with the individuals faith also...combined with Jesus'.

I believe that the healing Jesus did was symbolic of the healing that would occur when a person's soul would receive when they accepted Christ. That is why the people were healed by their 'faith.'
