No, you need to have a drive that can read DVD's. If you don't want to install one get a external dvd player but I would recommend putting in a internal DVD reader/burner. They are so very cheap now.

There is no way of doing it as you cannot read the DVD without a DVD drive. No software can overcome that either. And further more, you will need to do some nifty conversion and compression to get the video if that's what you wanna copy to fit onto a CD. The capacity of a CD and DVD is hugely different as well as the format which the data is being stored in. DVD stores data in formats and densities that are different from a CD and thus a regular CD/CDRW drive is not able to read DVDs due to limitations.

Best way is to get a DVDRW combo drive that can allow you to read/write DVDs and CDs. Nowadays most reputable manufacturers (LG/BenQ/Sony/Iomega, etc) make drives that can read/write all the various DVD formats as well as CDs.There are some that has Lightscribe technology that uses a laser to imprint designs onto the top face of the DVD, doing away with messy markers, labels and such.
