it really depends on how much time you plan to spend with the dog.

if you are going to be a good "parent," and spend plenty of time with the dog, taking him to the park DAILY, where he will be able to run around and play with other dogs, etc., and, in addition, take him for potty walks around the neighborhood (2-4 times throughout each day), then it doesn't really matter what kind of a dog you get. even a very high energy dog, with this healthy level of attention and activity, will be fine being in a relatively small house -- most dogs, when inside, will spend much of their days sleeping anyway, and simply do not require cavernous space to do so.

of course, if you don't intend to spend a great deal of time with the dog, 1) you should probably not get a dog, but if you for whatever selfish reasons absolutely must, 2) you want to get a breed that requires as little (relatively speaking, of course) activity as possible, which limits your choices to mostly small, toy breeds.

please keep in mind that any dog that is neglected is going to become frustrated, and will exhibit behavioral problems, especially if left only in a small, enclosed space, which will probably result in your taking him to the pound. to prevent this, please examine yourself to see if you're willing to make (major) sacrifices in your life and life-style in order to have a happy and healthy dog as a friend/pet/"child," before commiting yourself, and more importantly commiting the dog, to the relationship.

Bull terrier. They are sick. They are compact but have big dog attitudes and know how to stop when you don't want to play anymore(I guess any dog is like that if yo train it). They are friendlier than pit's so you don't have to worry about it attacking anyone as long as you train it. Run! chico run! That or a blue healer.

Rat Terriers are great dogs for inside dogs. I raise them and I love the breed. They are very smart and loyal.

Try a greyhound. Great dogs, the big dog for people with small-dog space and big-dog desires.
