when it appears that the further America goes from God the worse things get?

I always hear people say back in the day we didn’t have to lock our doors, kids weren’t shooting up schools, the crime rate was lower, divorce rates were lower, neighbors looked out for each other, children could freely play outside, you could hitch a ride without worrying about getting killed, etc. Are things really better?

By the way when I say God, I’m referring to the God of the Bible.

God is the number one motivator for war. It's not the bible that's ruined society, it's technology. The more accessible things are, the more accessible they are to ruin, but leave God out of it. And don't be so closed-minded as to discredit the destructibility of other religions and your own.

I don't believe that any of those things have to do with God, it has to do with society and progression. It's true that more people believe science is the answer and do not believe in an Almighty God, but is that really the cause? In my humble CHRISTIAN opinion, no.

You hear people say "back in the day." Which day? The 60's when there were serial killers like Bundy and doing drugs was widely accepted? The 20's, when mobs ran the country instead of the people? The 1800's when people were hanged simply for the color of their skin? Burned at the stake, whether innocent or guilty, for being a witch?

On the whole, society really hasn't changed that much. We still have the same crimes, the same human problems that we've had for hundreds of years. We just have MORE. More people, more ways to kill each other, more drugs to consume, more...

"Back in the day" kids weren't shooting up schools because guns were something that children were taught to use properly and respect.

"Back in the day" crime rates were lower, huh? I've always wondered if the crime rates actually take to into account rises in population and unemployment or lower income households... There are also many more ways to commit crimes now with the technology we have, think of that.

"Back in the day" divorce rates were lower because divorce was not widely accepted nor as easily obtained. If you got pregnant you either had to get married or be scorned... God forbid if the father of that child turned out to be an abusive S.O.B. after a while, you're stuck.

"Back in the day" neighbors looked out for each other. So start a neighborhood watch program. Throw a neighborhood bar-be-que to try to get to know your neighbors. The problem is that people are so busy with their own lives they don't take the time to do what used to be common place.

"Back in the day" children could freely play outside, but they can't now? What's so different? As far as I know children still play outside. Not sure what you mean there... Kidnapping has always been a risk, perverts abound no matter what the day in age. Parents should teach their kids of the possible dangers when out alone and what they should do in difficult or dangerous situations.

"Back in the day" you could hitch a ride without worrying? When? Where? I'd like to know, because you could hitch a ride in Mideival times and still get skewered.

Sorry, I don't see any irony... God or no God, human nature is still the same and always will be. Oh, and let's not mention the Pastor's wife that killed her husband because she wouldn't divorce. Or the clergy that sexually abuse children. God-fearing people are humans too.

Non-believers want God out of goverment and schools. Our national anthem has God in it. Our currency has God on it. You swear on the Bible to tell the truth, "so help you God." We live in a country that has Christianity written all over it, yet anyone is free to practice any religion they wish (as long as no harm comes to others in doing so - no human or animal sacrifices, please).

Like I said, I am a Christian. I believe in God, I believe in the Messiah, but I don't believe in organized religion or that God belongs in the government. The government can't interfere with religious practices, leave religion out of the government.

I'll not go into what happened when religion was largely a part of a country's government... and in some places still is.

First of all those people you hear saying that things were better "back in the day" are simply nostalgic types who are afraid of change. Crime and divorce rates were the same, just not as publicized. School shootings are actually DOWN from what they were, you could NEVER hitch a ride without getting killed because there have always been lunatics who liked to torture and kill hitchhikers (again, they just were kept much more hush), and children had to be just as careful then as they are now. In fact I see children playing outside all the time. Every generation is going to think their hayday was better....it'll be the same with yours soon enough.

And "non believers" don't want God out of America, just out of our government and our pocketbooks.

America is still the best! Yes, we as a nation are allowing ourselves to grow away from what God has taught us. Christians are not being strong enough and evil is overwhelming America as well as other countries. Read about the 2nd coming of Christ and you will see that we are so close to the forewarned end and all of bad things are actually listed as acts to show us that the end is near. False Christians are doing so much damage by saying they do things in God's name. Be aware of the false teachers and leaders and only follow God.

What else has changed since then? Well, let's see.

* More government: Society has gone into progressive decline thanks to the fostering of a socialist nanny state. People are encouraged to be lazy and depend upon the work of others. In certain instances, this mind-set leads to violence.

* Fewer guns: An aggressor can commit any heinous act his mind can conceive in this society, and chances are the victim will not be armed.

* More people: Population goes up, so does the number of crimes even if percentages stay roughly the same.

Your premise is weak.

You just got completely trashed. Your claims can be taken apart one by one.

Divorce rate: has gone up steadily since 1900, but ever since 1980 has been falling.

Crime rate: Lowest it has been in 30 years, and has completely PLUMMETED since the early 90s/late 80s.

Pregnancy rate: Between 1991-2004, the US birth rate for teens aged 15-19 declined 33 percent. OK, you didn't mention that, but you would have.

Things really are better...it's just the media doesn't want you to believe that. How does it feel being brainwashed?

I'm not by any means a "Godless" person, but as long as there is disagreement on how we should believe in God... or not, it would be best to live in a society that doesn't endorse God.

And it is also a cop out to blame the "breakdown of the family" on "godlessness". Individuals need to take personal responsibility to what happens in their life. After all, there is also divorce and adultery in a lot of so-called Christian homes. If you don't believe me, remember two names: Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart.

Prisons are full of Christians, not atheists. surprising what you are capable of doing when Jesus will forgive you

And just in case you missed it...

Seraph

Yeah. America was far better before science when they were burning witches.

Beat me to it

By the way, Netherlands has a much lower crime rate with 41% non religious.

Now, lets read about how God motivates us to go to war:

Do you mean "back in the day" when black people were considered subhuman and were owned, raped, and murdered? Do you mean back when women were told they could not possibly be as intelligent as men, and were not allowed to reach their own potential? How about back when native American women were sterilized against their will if they went to a hospital to have a baby? Do you mean back in the 30s when men, women, and children starved in the streets for a lack of social help? Do you mean back when workers didn't have laws specifying minimum wage and safe working conditions? Maybe you mean back when spouse and child abuse were accepted parts of life? Do you mean back when children were taken out of school at 8 or 10 to work fields, factories, and coal mines?

When was America God fearing? What good old days? The ones of segregation and the arms race? The 1800s when brother fought brother in the civil war and Indians were pushed off their land?
