During the First World War, the British began referring to German Shepherds as Alsatians because there was a tendency to repudiate "German" names; That's why the royal family are now known as Windsor, rather than Saxe-Coburg Gotha, the Battenburgs became the Mountbattens; in other places, towns and cities were renamed. Berlin, Ontario, for example became Kitchener.

Since Alsatian refers to Alsace, a district of France occupied by Germany from 1870 - 1918, the name was given to the popular dog breed in order to make it more "patriotic".

They are the SAME DOG. It's just two different names for the same one. Alsatian is from Alsasse, France. It's a part of France that was once owned by the Austrian Empire and was used for sheep herding, so that's how it got the name German Shepherd.
