Is it possible that his followers made him seem larger than life after his death in order to make the messiah legend seem more real, and further their own agenda and celebrity? Sorry this is not worded very well, but I am just draggin' *** today.

Of course it is possible, and many people did not believe Jesus was the Messiah until long after His death. It is all about what you choose to believe.

Just one thing to take into consideration though, His disciples weren't exactly celebrities, and it was very likely that many of them would suffer the same fate as Jesus. So, I don't really think they would have willingly put themselves in the spot like that unless it was true, but again, it is up to you.

No. The disciples were convinced He was dead. Besides, all the Pharisees would have had to do is produce the body--that would have shut up His followers quite quickly. As for stealing the body, a quaternion of soldiers guarded the grave. What is the likelihood that fishermen, outnumbered as they would have been and unarmed, could have taken highly trained, higher in number, armed and shielded Roman soldiers? Not likely. Especially since none of them died. Also, they would have been (and were) called crazy. Not a desireable deal. IN fact, right after Jesus died, they went back to their old job! It was only when Christ showed Himself to them that they believed!

It's likely that Jesus never lived, and his followers played the old you just missed him game. They told tall tales and weaved their stories till they were written down many years later (Gospels were scribed between 45 and 150 CE). The likelyhood of the literary character Jesus having ever lived is about the same as the likelyhood of total peace in the middle east starting now!

... not bloody likely.

That's okay, I get the gist.

Jesus asked His disciples, "who do men say that I am". They answered, "some say Elijah". "Who do you say that I am", asked Jesus. Peter replied "you are the Christ, the son of the living God".

It was not only after his sacrifice on the cross that His disciples came to believe He was the Messiah.

What exactly do you think He was crucufied for? For announcing Himself as the Messiah. Bit of a drag to be crucified for something you haven't even been labled yet, then.

Well, he had to be crucified in order to rise, didn't he? How could they go around sprouting He was the messiah when He hadn't risen from the dead yet? They had to wait till it actually happened.

In Jesus dwells ALL the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Col.2:9 below) -

oGod the Father
oThe Holy Spirit of God the Father
oThe Word of God the Father

The only begotten son of God the Father (Jn.1:14 below), Jesus (the Word - Jn.1:1, Jn.1:14 below), His beloved Son (Matt.3:17 below), was conceived of the Holy Ghost (Matt.1:20 below).

It is God the Father who conceived in Mary (blessed among women) His very Word through His very Holy Spirit (Matt.1:20 below).

Col.2:9 For in him dwelleth ALL the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Jn.1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, (Matt.1:20, Matt.3:17 below)) full of grace and truth.

Jn.1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (Re.1:6, Lk.1:47 below).

Re.1:6And hath made us kings and priests unto God (Jn.1:1 above) AND his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Lk.1:47And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour (Jn.1:14, Jn.1:1, Re.1:6 above).

Lk.1:68 Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

Matt.3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son (Matt.1:20 below), in whom I am well pleased.

Matt.1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost (Jn.1:14, Matt.3:17 above).
