i'm a christian (baptist) and i'm in love with a guy who is a member of Iglesia ni Cristo since birth, but he has always had doubts about many of their beliefs. He has always considered leaving, especially now that we are in a relationship, but he is having a hard time dealing with leaving his friends and possibly hurting his family. My family is opposed to our relationship because of this difference in religion and i'm curious to know what the chances of him leaving are.

Why would anyone stay in a church that had beliefs they didn't agree with?

We talked about the religious issue before we started dating and he told me he would never want to make me join his church, especially when he has so many doubts. However, his church does not allow anyone to date outside of their church, so in the mean time I'm a secret to all of his church friends. What should I do?

I've heard rumors of such. The Church of Christ is a very good group. They have now 23 sects. They have split several times. There are a handful that is really really out there.

Seems like I heard, most of them are in the extreme west. California area.

The church of Christ is a group of christians that are trying to restore and return to christianity as it was practiced in New Testament times and as it is taught in the Bible. We try to speak where the bible speaks, be silent where the bible is silent, call bible things by bible names and do bible things in bible ways.

Each congregation of the church is self-governing led by a group of men as elders who meet the qualifications outlined in Titus 1 and 1 Timothy 3. There is no organization on Earth that governs the church except the local congregation, no pope, no conference, and no nation-wide or world-wide headquarters. Christ is the only head of the church (Eph 1:22-23)

Yes people leave the church. Among the more famous examples are Max Lacado and Pat Boone. Both were members of the church and have left.

The church preaches from the bible, and will usually give the bible references where their beliefs can be found so you can see these answers in your own bible. They do not practice "brain washing" or other things associated with the word "cult".

If you wish to learn more about the church of christ, I suggest you either contact the local congregation or look at the web-sites I have referenced below. You may consider signing up for a free Bible study course, available at most congregations or on these web sites. Again it is free. This will help you to learn about the church's beliefs first hand, instead of getting second-hand information that may be wrong.

Also, why must he leave his religion to come to yours? Maybe you should investigate his and think about going with him. At least, after you both look at the other's beliefs, you may come to a better understanding of each other.

One more thing, the "Church of Christ" is not the same as the "United Church of Christ" or the "Church of Christ Scientists". Please do not confuse these very different groups.

I have heard of this group and it is a cult. I know that any "church" that focuses its energies on condemning other believers in Christ and other churches is not a good thing. I will tell you that I used to attend a Church of Christ group called "Crossroads". It too was a cult although I didn't know it at the time. Leaving was the hardest thing I have ever done. The group (family) stops talking to you and kind of disowns you when you leave. It is well worth it though. I am so happy now. I am still a believer in Jesus Christ, but practice Christianity in a good normal church and at home. I would recommend that you pray for and with your boyfriend and that if he leaves that he do it all at once. (a clean break). I did not answer my phone or anything when I left. You might research this cult and then sit down with him and look at the facts together. Good luck to you and God bless. Morgan

1. There may be more than one group of 'church of Christ'. I was one of a group that went by that name; myself being a deacon. I have left that group, a few years ago (for biblical reasons). To find out if it is a similar group; find out if it accepts/authorizes 'instruments of music, orphan homes, independent congregations, etc. Then get back to me.
