You can know the latest about bird flu by looking into the WHO updates at http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/en/
Not worried because youre vegetarian? Guess again- several of the fatalities were also in vegetarians- you can contract bird flu by simply BEING AROUND infected birds- it is not by eating them that most persons were infected, but by handling them.
Also, if bird flu makes begins to be spread from human to humna, it wont matter if your vegetarian or Christian or Republican- in that case youre at risk of contracting it..That is the event you need to worry about a lot more that the current mode of spread.

Bird flu is a virus which is infecting more and more poultry and people across the world. So far, Asia, Europe and Africa, have found cases of avian influenza, but it is expected that the virus will eventually cause a pandemic, a world epidemic which will be very difficult to contain. If you think being a vegetarian offers protection from the disease, you are very wrong. No human infection with the virus was due to poultry products consumption. The virus is transmitted through close contact with birds, as the virus is mainly contained in the intestines and feces of the fowl. Thus it is important to avoid bird flu contaminated areas. Also, thorough cooking of poultry meat or eggs will destroy the virus, so it is absolutely safe to still consume such products. I've heard chicken that's contaminated with the bird flu was being illegally imported from China and being delivered to a Chinese restaurant supplying warehouse in Michigan. The press has claimed that chicken cooked to a certain degree should not be of any harm.
Get this! Supposedly the FDA new about the chicken and still allowed sales and purchase of the contaminated chicken!

Well, the bird flu fatality rate (in people) now is over 50%, and there has been limited person-to-person transmission in a few clusters.
That fatality rate may very well come down if it mutates to become easily spread from person to person.
I think there isn't enough coverage in the media.

If bird flu virus changes and is then spreadable between people, that is when the problems will really start. Being veggie won't make a bit of difference if that happens.
