Okay, would anyone like to explain to me the current military and political situation that is going on out there and why? I'm hoping for something with a little more insight than 'Two countries are bombing the hell out of one another over two soldiers who got taken hostage' because that would seem to me, for both sides, a little insane. Thank you x

Sadly, it is all insane. Keep in mind that when I answer this question, I am biased (pro-palestinian/lebanese) and my answer should be read critically.
In truth, it goes back long before those two soldiers were captured. Things like this have happened before, and POWs are often traded. In short though, the Israelis have refused to negotiate and have began a bombing of Lebanon who they say is an enemy becuase it will not oust Hezbollah (the group that captured the soldiers) from their land. Lebanon's government is weak though, and has little power over Hezbollah. Hezbollah has also flung a few rockets over the border, but they are not particularly strong and they have a limited range. Around 200 Lebanese have died and around 15 Israelis have died. The strange part is, Israel is ttacking the Lebanese, not Hezbollah.
I'll try to stay neutral here, by saying that both sides are at fault, but I think you can gather my opinion from this, and maybe a few facts as well.

Ok, I'll try best to keep it simple.

Israel kidnapped many lebanese civilians(just regular civilians, not "terrorists") and jailed them for years now, refusing to at least court them so that they at least know their fate or the reason why they were kept in jails. Ok, Hezbolla, a very strong lebanese Shia'at Islamic group was sick and tired as many other muslims around the world, of this unfairness, when muslims get killed, women raped, disrespected , humiliated in jails (like Guantanamo), so they decided to take a step forward to get the kidnapped lebanese people back.. Well how ? They kidnapped two Israeli soldiers(not civilians) who were ON the lebanese territory (for an unknown reason) , they didn't hurt them but only asked for the kidneped lebanese back. Well, this is between Hezbolla and Israel, but Israel started an open war on Lebanon, blasted north and south east and west, killed over 100, 400 wounded, etc, blasted the airport, and much more..Tell me what does Lebanon have to do with this ? The lebanese government is too weak to face Hezbolla, even Israel is having trouble dealing with it, so how do they say that it's the government's responsability to kick'em out of Lebanon, or they'll be "punished" with them . WHY? why is this happening ? Listen, I am not lebanese, I am not a shia'at muslima, but I have a mind, if you watch CNN all you see is a bunch of terrorists which are a small part of the middle eastern society but you don't see the other side of the war, you don't see the innocent people getting killed, today about 10 children got killed in Lebanon all of ages 7-9, they got blasted while they were token from south lebanon to somewhere where they were trying to escape with members of their family. That's the picture I have of this war. By the way what you just saw in Lebanon is an every day scenario of Palestinian's and Iraqi's lives.. God bless everybody.

The greatest mistake Israel could make at the moment is to forget that Israel itself is a mistake. It is an honest mistake, a well-intentioned mistake, a mistake for which no one is culpable, but the idea of creating a nation of European Jews in an area of Arab Muslims (and some Christians) has produced a century of warfare and terrorism of the sort we are seeing now. Israel fights Hezbollah in the north and Hamas in the south, but its most formidable enemy is history itself.

This is why the Israeli-Arab war, now transformed into the Israeli-Muslim war (Iran is not an Arab state), persists and widens. It is why the conflict mutates and festers. It is why Israel is now fighting an organization, Hezbollah, that did not exist 30 years ago and why Hezbollah is being supported by a nation, Iran, that was once a tacit ally of Israel’s. The underlying, subterranean hatred of the Jewish state in the Islamic world just keeps bubbling to the surface. …

The smart choice [for Israel] is to pull back to defensible — but hardly impervious — borders. That includes getting out of most of the West Bank — and waiting (and hoping) that history will get distracted and move on to something else. This will take some time, and in the meantime terrorism and rocket attacks will continue.

The recent conflict has been sparked by Hizbollah crossing the border and killing 3 Israeli soldiers and kidnapping 2 to try and secure the release of prisoners being held in Israel. Israel have retaliated with force and Hizbollah are responding with attacks of their own.

It's proxy war between Iran and USA.
Iran supplies Hezbollah and Hamas, USA supplies Israel.
Think of it as a modern version of Korea with USSR & USA.

Iran needs to divert attention away from it's nuclear plans which are probably much further ahead than it admits publicly.
A few weeks ago the UN was ready to come down hard on them but now the attention has shifted. Once they have the bomb the whole region becomes their hostage.
As the current Iranian regime has shown no respect for international law the world will be much more dangerous.

It looks like Isreal needs to be taken back as the gift it was given to them in the first place. They have not respected the people that were displaced, therefore their contract must be foreclosed.
All comunities and religions should be respected in their own right and there is no justification to render civilans in any country without the basic means of survival.

This is a total abuse of humanity. Any government supporting the attacks on the surrounding countries will have to accept Karma. What goes around comes around.

While all this sh-- is going on there are entire families being wiped out in Africa.

When is the world going to realise that it is about time women were making the laws. Men in power are disfunctional and greedy.

I am not a femenist---simply thinking logically!!!

The two countries have been at war for centuries it seems (religion, need you ask) and the stand off with the hostages is just a catalyst to light the fuse. Its a fucked up situation that will not resolve itself. But unfortunately civilian people will suffer at the hands of the military.
Think of the Britain and northern Ireland situation, religious bollocks but it seems to matter to some narrow minded leaders. Like Dubbya Bush and his megalomaniac tendencies.

As usual (and will be the demise of world civilization), the Islamic group, Hezlabah (sp?) that is housed in Lebanon (and even has some members in the Lebanan gov't), kidnapped some Isreali soldiers, the Lebanese gov't won't and can't do anything about it, because they've let these psycho Islamic groups run free in their country and now can't control them.

There's no way it can be explained here. You have to understand history starting with the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Here's a quick read:
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Middle East Conflict."

The same things keep happening over, and over, and over again. Doesn't anyone learn from history?

The Israelis are the psychotics. They keep labouring UN mandates about this and that. What about the UN mandate that tells them to give back to the palestinians that which is theirs? yes they have giving up Gaza, if you truly believe that. What about the Golan Heights and the West Bank. They are an occupying force no different to armies that have illegally occupied other countries.
