Well, this is not really a question of right and wrong, more a question of what kind of guy this is, what kind of friend you have, what age you are and what the situation in general is.
Assuming you are at least teenagers:
On the one hand, if your friend is a good friend, knows that you "like" (as in, have a crush on) this guy and doesn't have a personal vested interest (if the friend is a guy, he is not interested in you, if girl, she's not interested in your crush, etc.), s/he might put in a good word for you and somehow try to hook you two up.
If the guy has a crush on you back, he'd be excited to get your number regardless of how he gets it. If he just wants to be friends, he will take it as such and leave it at that. If he doesn't like you, then this probably saved you the embarrassment of being rejected to your face.
Above two paragraphs are only a few of countless possibilities.
In this type of situation, you are totally dependent on this friend of yours. How you are viewed will be through him/her. S/He can construe you as weak, lacking confidence, or just another girl. S/He can also make you look like you are the greatest thing on earth and make the guy believe that he should go after you. If you are not comfortable with this dependence, DO IT YOURSELF!!!
In other words, you can control your own actions, but not necessarily other people's actions and their responses/reactions to you. You could also endanger the friendship you have by somehow thinking that this friend didn't represent you the best way. Essentially, the more you represent yourself, the less your dependence on third party interpretations that may or may not be correct and the more you see the "real" side of things! (In this case, you could have seen for yourself what this guy's reaction was to receiving your number and what kind of interest he showed in you rather than a friend saying something like "Yeah, he seemed cool about it" (which could mean pretty much anything).)
Best of luck to you!

P.S. After posting the answer, read that this friend is a guy. Personally, I wouldn't give a friendgirls number to a guy I didn't know even if this friendgirl asked me. I'd feel awkward too (that what you mean whether this is right or wrong?). If this dude is a friend of mine, and I am NOT interested in the friendgirl, and I think they'd be a good match, I might consider it. But again, the last few paragraphs above still apply.

I don't see anything wrong with that, just be careful with friends though they might see what you see in him and they casually forget to give the guy your number.

yeah i think it would have been better coming from you, he might take getting from a friend as childish depending on how old you are. but then again you never know.
