Christians emphasize the cross as a point victory!
Now the kingdom has come and we are to live as a new creation.
Not sure about catholics, dont want to speak for them!

A crucifix is a cross with the corpus (body of Christ) on it.
A major point among Protestants is that including the image of Christ turns it into an idol. Another oft-used point is that Jesus is no longer on the cross, He has been raised.
Catholic responses would include: 1. If you show reverence to a cross, it either is- or isn't idolatry regardless of whether there is a body included in the representation; and 2. The cross was a common way of death back then; but salvation for all mankind was purchased when Jesus hung on the cross. Not when anyone else did; and not when He rose from the dead.
This is not intended to be a comprehensive examination of all sides of the issue, so don't read too much into the omission (or oversimplification) of any certain point.

A Cross is a Cross. A crucifix is a cross with the crucified Christ on it.
Catholics use both crosses and crucifixes. The cross show us that Christ is resurrected and lives (the power of God). The Crucifix shows us the sacrifice that Christ endured for us (the Love of God).
Remembering that Paul preaches the crucified Christ (1 Cor 1:23) and John sees Christ in heaven as though Crucified and also speaks of Jesus being slain from the foundation of the World.

Crucifixes have a Corpus on them which represents the Body of Christ. Crosses do not. I am a Catholic and we try to always remember that without the crucifixion of our Lord we would be nothing. We hold the death of Jesus as a very important thing. We do believe in the Resurrection but without His death there would be none. Protestants focus more on the resurrection. I believe that the Crucifixion is an uncomfortable thing for them. Not that they don't believe but that they have a different focus.

The reason Catholics have crucifixes (that have the body of Jesus on them) is because the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross is still going on. It will continue until the end of the world. As St. Paul says our sufferings make up for what is lacking in Christ's death.

I've been told the reason is because Jesus is resurrected. A cross without Jesus on means exactly that. That is why most churches have a cross, because Jesus rose on the third day. If you look up Roman Architecture in an Encyclopedia Britannica you will see pictures of crosses (without Jesus on) dating back to 150 AD, well before the Roman Catholic church started, so this is the traditional and correct form to display.

A born again Christian knows that Christ is alive, there for he can not still be on the cross and we wear the plain cross to show the world what we be-live. Die-hard catholics still have trouble with the idea that Christ suffered for, but now lives in and with US. So they need a visual reminder of the suffering.

The cross represents the ressurected Christ (who is no longer on the cross).
The crucifix shows Jesus on the cross, a symbol of His sacrifice for the sins of humanity.
While the first shows the defeat of Death, the second shows the love for those in need of redemption.

I always thought crosses and crucifixes were the same thing. I think its just the way we say it. Crucifixes might have been called that because he was crucified. other Christians use the term cross, because that was the tool used to sacrifice him on.

The crucifix is sinful because the 10 commandments say not to have any graven images, but catholics take that one out.
