GIve it enough attention, and some toys, so that he / she doesn't feel the need any longer.

You answered your own question. The kitten was taken away from a nurturing Mother. You are the subsitute so do your best. As time passes the cat will feel more secure just like a child and become independent of you.
If the cat might cause a problem like being under your feet and tripping that has to stop to prevent injury to you or the cat.
Always let the cat know where you are by humming or talking so he knows you have not deserted him. Never walk around a cat if he is lying on floor in your path. Gently nudge him [firmly] out of the way or he'll be there when ever he pleases. Next make a loud high pitch sound. It's like a warning and he is on alter thinking he must get to a safe place. Cats do not like to be scolded. Cats react to good experience and bad experience but they do not have a concience.
You had a treasure so enjoy and keep polished with love.

This makes one wonder if this is your cat?
Is this the family cat?
Cats like attention. Just like people.
They also are attracted to things that have the scent of fish, chicken, catnip, cheese and milk.
Are you eating when the cat gets annoying?
Cat treats help and perhaps another cat to spend time with.
Good Luck!

He is probably doing that to show you affection, not really because he wants affection from you. If you do spray him he may associate being near you with that unhappy thought, instead of the act of following you. I am not sure if you should do that. Just love him and let him love you....you arent always home and he sleeps other times right?

well if you really want your cat to stop following you...spray it with water when it comes near you. But it will probably hate you for the rest of its natural born life.

Throw a toy, or a piece of chicken in the opposite direction of where you're walking.

Kick it in the teeth......
I'm not serious...... !!!!
But why did you go to the trouble of getting a companion animal if you don't want a companion?
You are mother now. Would you ignore a child if it wanted your attention?
