Olive oil is an excellent cooking medium, but do not drink it!.

Oils in general are used for frying or for garnishing. If you are cooking Italian, Greek or Turkish food, along with dishes from the Arab Mediterranean littoral, then Extra Virgin Olive Oil would be the natural medium. However, British food is best fried in beef dripping, or for a so-called healthier option, sunflower oil. Dripping, however, can be healthy, as fats add to the satiety of a meal, therefore one does not eat too much. The trick with dripping is not to use too much, and to reserve it for cooking stews and chips. Potatoes will saute best in Sunflower oil, as will onions and garlic.

Oils derived from nuts should be used with caution, because of allergies. I had status asthmaticus (a serious attack of asthma) on eating a restaurant meal that had been cooked in peanut oil.

Another cooking medium is Ghee (clarified butter), which is excellent for Persian food, and dishes emanating from the Indian sub-continent. Your cookbook will tell you when to use this product.

I am, by the way, a chef.

The mediterranian diet is supposed to be one of the healthiest and they do use a lot of olive oil in their cooking. It is certainly better than most other oils.

I think the answer is yes, but as with most things only in moderation.

It's a good oil to cook with - it enhances the flavor of the food.

Also, I use it as a lotion - it's great for your skin & hair.

You can drink it - but just a little a day (maybe a tablespoon) - it will help keep you regular.

I wouldn't drink the stuff but definitely use extra virgin olive oil sparingly when cooking.
