SHAKE

I don't know why people think you shake a martini. (Well, i do know, its cause of James Bond, which is wrong)

The reason you stir a martini is to keep it CLEAR. When you shake the martini, you get air bubbles in the mixture which ruins the look of it until you allow the bubbles to settle down. By that point the martini will have warmed up a bit.

Just because James Bond says 'shaken' doesn't mean that it's right.
Shaking causes the ice in the shaker to chip.
Small chips melt very quickly, especially when exposed to alcohol.
Those melted chips add water to your martini.
Ergo, James Bond orders a watered-down martini.

If you don't want a watered down martini, then you want it stirred.
Most self-respecting bartenders will not shake a martini unless you specifically ask them to, then they will chuckle under their breath at you. That being said, do whatever tastes best to you.

Cheers.

I shake with cracked ice(not crushed ice-will melt and mess up the martini), a hint of dry vermouth for exactly 5 seconds really fast; strain into martini glass, add several olives....

Some bartenders only shake drinks with alcohol and a non-alcohol mixer. A martini is pure gin (or vodka) and dry vermouth, so it should be stirred. In truth, its a personal preference.

Shake it until the shaker is almost too cold to hold with your bare hands. Voila, the PERFECT martini.

For my martini - it doesn't matter as long as it's Bombay Gin.
