If you're a US citizen, you may need a form of government ID such as a driver's license, but other than that, you don't need a passport or anything like that. For more information, check out: http://travel.state.gov/

Within the United States, there will most likely be a need for identification of some sort, especially if you are traveling by air. A driver's license is needed to legally operate a vehicle. If you have a foreign driver's license, you may need to get an international driver's permit to accompany your license. However, you won't need ID in order to cross state borders.

The only time you might need a passport is when you enter the country. While certain countries in the Western Hemisphere have agreements that do not require a passport, that will change in a year or two given the current state of global politics. Within the US, it will be rare to need a passport if other identification exists, but a passport is definitely the strongest form of ID due to its international acceptance.

Other than that, you should have no problems with travel within the US. Enjoy!

If you're entering from a foreign country other than Mexico or Canada you will need a passport and possibly a visa.
You don't need it to travel within the country but you should have some sort of ID in case of an accident. Passport is good but a drivers liscense or birth certificate are also good.
You'll probably never need to show id unless you use a credit card alot. Then sometimes the retailer asks for id.
