I would go for the smokies. Gatlinburg and Helen are nice but they are pricey. Perhaps one of the less known towns in the area like waynesville, maggie valley, townsend etc.

I live in E. TN and all of these are good recommendations, but don't forget the Smokies! Gatlinburg is awesome in the summer, but it isn't really "cheap". Also, if you are not familiar with it... the Appalachian Museum is great too! Big Ridge State Park is one of my absolute favorites AND you can rent a small cabin there too! If you did Big Ridge, you could visit the Appl. Museaum also, they are only 15 or 20 minutes apart. Very inexpensive and very cultural. Have fun!

You may consider Helen, GA. It is nice, kind of like Gatlinburg. I don't know how much cash you have but I used to go to Six Flags-Atlanta with my then b/f and we would go there one day then site seeing in Atlanta the next day.

Cumberland Gap maybe? Nothing fancy, but there's the big cave and the mountain lodge type deal. Could be fun if you're just looking to relax.

Go to Ashville. There's tons to do and you can go see the Biltmore estate.
