I live just south of Reno, NV and it does get hot here in the summer. This week we have highs in the 100's.
We have a swamp cooler and it works really well.
It works its best in hotter, drier heat. Our humidity level in the summer is in the teens, so this is the perfect place for one.
We got ours at Home Depot about 7 years ago and aside from the usual maintenance stuff, its worked quite well.
Ours is the kind you put in the wall, its in the front room, and we open all the back windows about an inch to pull the cool air back. I have friends who have the ones on top of the house that pushes the air through the vents and they like theirs too-- but obviously, those are alot more expensive.
We paid about $400 for the room one and then about $200 to a handyman to install it. Best money ever spent!
Go to your local home store (Home Depot, Lowes, ect.) and the people there can tell you what the best one is for your size house and best value.
Happy Cooling!
P.S. Some places call it an evaporative cooler- its the same thing.

I am in Oregon, the Pacific NW. It can get hot here, but not a dry hot like other states. That's because we get the ocean air to make it a moister air. During the summer, it gets between 75 and 105, but the 100 degree weather isn't all the time and doesn't last that long. Usually, it is only around for 1-3 days, then it goes back to the 70s and 80s.
What is a swamp cooler? People here use an air conditioner, if they have the money for one, or fans.

I live in Texas, and it's almost always hot here. I don't know what a swamp cooler is. But I do run my air conditioner all the time, and I have a couple of small fans in the house too to help circulate the air a little.

i live in Sacramento California, today its gonna reach 104, that's hot!!!!swamp coolers are only good til a certain temp, then they don't work, cuz all they do is start blowing out hot air because the air out side is so hot it doesn't cool down when it runs thru the wet mesh screens on the swamp cooler

yes it is 106 degrees and 3:30 pm where I am at.Why do you want a swamp cooler.Buy a refrigerated unit.Swamp coolers release too much humidity and make your floors sticky if you have carpets.I know I have tried them.

regrettably, no longer warm adequate New England does no longer get very warm summers, everyday highs are purely about 80 F contained in the Worcester section, in spite of the indisputable fact that on celebration it does get to about 100F. Too undesirable that doesn't ensue each day round right here :( i love warm climate
