My son is 2.5 and he only says like 2-5 words really clearly other than that it is just babble. I already had his hearing checked and he has no hearing problems... He is really intelligent and acts way older than 2.5 most people think he is way older like 3 or 4 until he won't talk. Am i doing something wrong? How can I help my son communicate with me, he gets so frustrated sometimes when he tries but gets no where. Any advice would be greatly appriciated. He starts pre school in august and I wonder how he will do not being able to communicate with his new care givers...

you have to correct his words for him so that he can hear the correct ennunciation....if he says "tup" instead of "cup"..you need to say you mean a "CUP"....when i took my son in for his 3 year check up(he is now 4), his pediatrician recommended him to a speech therapist...if he gets frustrated when he is trying to get people to understand him is a sign that there is some sort of speech problem...my son is starting pre-kindergarten in the fall and will continue his speech class at school (yes a public school)..he is a lot easier to understand now, but still isn't doesn't enunciate words 100% correctly...there are lots of options out there...talk to your pediatrician, i am sure that they can recommend someone to you....hearing doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it...good luck!!

i AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2 YEAR OLD. i DON'T WORRY THOUGH AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU. mY SON ALSO WALKED LATE BUT WHEN HE DID IT WAS PERFECT WITH NO FALLING DOWN. i SUSPECT YOUR LITTLE ONE IS A BIT OF A PERFECTIONIST, AS ALOT OF VERY INTELLIGENT CHILDREN ARE, AND WILL ONLY TALK WHEN HE CAN'T HEAR ANY DIFFERENCE IN WHAT HE SAYS AND WHAT YOU SAY. tHAT MAY TAKE AWHILE ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE LIKE ME AND TEND TO TALK TO HIM LIKE HE'S AN ADULT.

I know how you feel. My sister is 2.5 years old and will turn 3 in Dec. She can only say a few words clearly yet my step-mom thinks she's so intelligent. I get so annoyed with her repeating the same stuff over and over again. I don't know what's up. Maybe going to pre-school will help him. He'll have to learn to speak. Or maybe you can find a speech pathologist and ask them what to do.

You're not necessarily doing anything wrong and there may not be anything wrong with him, either. Each kid develops at his/her own pace. It's clear that while his vocabulary is very limited right now, he's speaking and using those few words very well.

I wouldn't worry about this for another 6 months - 1 year.

Being 2.5- The care givers will most likely ask for your promission to have him evaluated for an Early intervention program- The state of Mass should provide this service free of charge-- There are different levels of need and they will work with you to develop a plan that will work for you-- They can teach sign language so you can communicate on some level to start they also do mouth exercises to stretch the mouth muscles along with making the child try to say the word(as pianful as this might seem to the parent- it is best to give the child a chance). Also you don't say if your 2.5 year old has any older sibling(s), for I was put in speech therapy because my older siblings would finish my sentences. Some cases might even require surgery- the muscle under the tongue (the part that conects the tongue to the bottom of your mouth) may not have developed properly and maybe too short to form certain words.

My son had the same issue. He was our second child and he didn't say a word until he was 3 years old. We were very concerned about his hearing and had him tested a number of times. The funny thing is that when he started to speak his use of the English language was very good. It was almost as if he didn't want to speak until he had a good grasp. He's now 20 and it's something I look back at now and laugh about. If you've had his hearing tested and there are no problems I wouldn't get concerned (unless a Dr. tells you that you should be.)

Good luck

My son is two and is the same way. Boys just don't develop as fast as girls do;especially in the speech department. You aren't doing anything wrong, it just takes time. If this still persists at 3.5, then you may want to ask your pediatrician what to do about it. My three year old has a wide variety of words he says but not much in the way of sentences. His sentences will come out as babble.

Dont worry, you child is unique and will grow at his own pace. but if you think there is a medical problem take him to see a doctor right away. My 13 year old son was diagnosed with severe deafness in both ears when he was 4! It took a while to find the right diagnosis. But hes fine now, we cant get him to stay quiet!

Don't pressure him. He thinks he is saying the words right. It is normal for him to sound that way. His muscles are getting stronger each day.

My step son didn't start speaking clearly until he was almost 4, but my 18 month old says alot of words. Some kids are just different. Just keep trying to teach him something everyday. Always try to be patient and this will help him be patient. I never speak "baby talk" to mine, but my step son's mother did....this makes it harder for kids to learn how to speak properly also. I hope this might help some and if you would like to talk anymore about it, feel free to write. :)
