I had the same problem with my daughter, who is 10. I just made her wear the stained, ripped clothes for a while. I HATED to do that, but it embarrassed her enough that she started to take better care of her things. The most recent thing I did was made her use her own allowance to replace some clothes she carelessly ruined. May not work on the 5 yr old, but should work on the older kids.

you must take it the way kids are...if they were to behave matured, they no more qualify to be kids. I am sure you have a good chance to be satisfied as a great mom in a decades time when you think the struggle you had over bringing up your kids. This is like a manager who had a responsibilty of executing a task with limited resources and a lot of known and unknown challenges ahead.

GOOD LUCK!
why not try making them wear the torn and tattered clothes until they are embarrased. take all the clothes that are still worth saving away from them.
maybe when they understand that mommy isn't made of money they'll start respecting what they have.

when i was their age i was pretty much the same way, glad my mom didn't do to me what i suggested to you...LOL!

Give them one outfit to wear for a whole week. Then they will have to take care of it until the next week when they get their next outfit. Make them earn their clothes.
