Tie the magnet to a string and let it hang. Next, see where the Sun is so that you can lock in one direction East/West. When you are facing east, the north is to your left, and you can determine the North and south pole of your magnet.

2 ways.

1. use a known magnet and see how it attract. opposite attract

2. use the right hand rule of magnetism. F=ILB. use that magnet and a current source. determine the direction of force. determine the B field

Get a magnet that is already marked and match up the poles, opposites attract so you can obviously then mark your magnet.

If you have a directional compass you could use that. What end the compass says is north that end of the magnet is north.
