I would start by making a list of my child's special needs and interests. Make a list of what you think is important. Security, schedules, qualification of teachers, expectations for students, special programs, test scores, school motto, discipline and curriculum are all good topics to address. I would then visit the schools. You can call the office and make appointments with the principal or administrator on the individual campus.

I would ask for a tour of the campus. I would even ask to sit in for 30 minutes in the classes of the grade level my child would be entering. As you are observing, then ask yourself is this a place a safe, positive learning environment for your child. I have even talked to teachers during their conference times about their philosophies.

You can also talk to parents in the area (Although you really have to careful with this some parents have axes to grind that will have absolutely nothing to do with your child.)

Then trust your instincts. You know your child best.

I have taught for 18 years. I love talking to parents. I want all the children and parents in my room glad to be a part of my classroom. This is what I do for my personal children when I have had concerns about who that might have as a teacher.

In order for you to pick the best elementary school in your area, to do some research on them, from your neighbors, on-line, visit the school get the feel of it. You can take someones advise, but in order for you to feel comfortable with your child attending that school you must check it out and mainly visit the school unexpectedly, catch them off guard, that will tell you everything you need to know there.

You should start by looking at the class and school size. The smaller the class size, the more attention that the teacher will have for each individual student.

Ask your friends. Try to talk to people at the different schools and get their opinions. Go on tours of the facilities.
