If you are using Windows then you can use Windows Media Player (WMP). It is not the most robust media player but it's very functional. WMP plays many file types, including MPEG-2. DVD movies you find at your local Blockbuster use the MPEG-2 format. However, WMP does not support certain file types you might find on the Internet, such as streaming video.

The website filehippo.com (http://www.filehippo.com/software/multimedia/) has a selection of both freeware and commercial media players. You can download and install RealPlayer, Quicktime, Windows Media Player 11 beta, VLC media player and many more popular media players. The before mentioned media players are all free. I try to stay way from Quicktime and RealPlayer because they both suffer from never ending security exploits.

I am very fond of Cyberlink's PowerDVD player because it's easy to use and has a large number of features. It has very intiutive controls. Unfortunately, it is a commercial product so you'll need to shell out some dough. However, you can try it for free during a 30-day trial period. WinDVD is also an outstanding commercially available media player. It also has a trial period. You can find the downloads for these players also at filehippo.com (http://www.filehippo.com/software/dvd/)
