I love this cumbia by Los Angeles Azules, but I honestly don't know exactly what this phrase means. I know what the words "mi" and "cantar" mean, but I've never heard "cantar" as a noun. Is the singer talking about his own effort to sing or his act of singing? Thanks for the help in advance.

It would depend on how it's used, since I don't know the lyrics I can't say what is meant in this case. Literally translated it would be 'my singing' but it is commonly used in songs to denote one's attitude or claims in a specific matter usually an alter ego of sorts.

I don't really perceive a difference between "effort to sing" and "act of singing" as you've mentioned. They're both right as far as I'm concerned.

You have noticed that, in Spanish, verbs in the infinitive form can often be used as nouns. When this is done, they are always masculine. The equivalent in English is often a gerund.

Mi cantar es bueno.
"My singing is good."

Me gusta su bailar.
"I like his/her dancing."

when he says "mi cantar" i.e. escucha mi cantar... He's saying "listen to my song". Imagine a seranade where the guy wants to get the girl to come to her window

Cantar can be song. Like "My song." Or it could be his act of singing.
