I owned 3 VW's so far... a 91 Corrado G60, 97 VW Jetta GLX VR6 and a 2003 Golf 2.0 all stick shift...
If you but a VW don't get automatic...they are the DEVIL! also I hear that some early MK4 99.5-00 have electrical problems and had recalls. Check engine lights are not uncommon.
I love the new GTI's 2.0 Turbos with the DSG paddle shifting... really cool... even though I prefer the 3rd pedal and manual shift knob!!

VW -lots of safery features, different engines available,
classy interior, stylish look, nice ride, well, they are not that good about reliability, and parts are quite expensive...although latest models are doing better so far. And you need to take better care of it, I mean it need better care than some Corolla that never breaks...
Well, since you are looking for a new car, it should be OK, you are covered by the warranty. Test drive it, if you like it, go for it, just be prepared, it is not as reliable as Toyota.

I like them. They're generally well-made, long-lasting, and good on mileage.
Also, most of them are cute.
