Two subjects that should be exterminated from this site. Both sides argue back and forth, does either side think for a moment that typed words are going to cause a change? Agnostics get angry when God is mentioned and Christians try to be another Billy Graham .People tend to communicate better in person, see what the other person is like.May have more in common than you think.

I love discussing religion and politics!

There is much more to religion and spirituality than overbearing Christian "I'm-better-than-you-are" attitudes (yes, that is how many of you come off, and I don't see anything in the Bible to suggest that Jesus was that way, so I gotta believe it is YOU and not Christianity itself), but even that attitude is interesting! Why do people feel that way? Have they been taught that, or does it arise through their study of religion and the Bible? Why are some Christians NOT that way? Are Muslims, Jews and Buddhists really different? All of them?

In many countries, societies and cultures throughout history (and today), many (if not most) people have thought that governing should be done in concert with religious views. That attitude was more workable when we lived in tribes and small cities, and doesn't seem to work AT ALL in trying to govern large, heterogeneous countries of more than 350 million people, but it is still a desire for many people.

I don't thnk there is a problem in talking about these issues, but there is a problem in NOT talking about them. Flaming, shouting down others and making fun of people is the problem, which stems from a lack of understanding that differences do not have to mean that someone is right and someone is wrong.

Let's talk more, not less!

It is certainly possible to have a useful, meaningful conversation
about this stuff.

However, it requires that nobody resort to sound-bites and
vast oversimplifications.

Indeed, the above question stereotypes agnostics and
Christians both.

The vast vast majority of people in this country are
capable of living side-by-side with persons of different
religious inclinations. We know they are capable of it
because they do it.

However, when people start asking questions to deliberately
enflame one side or the other, it gets ugly.

Not that it matters, but I am an agnostic (militant agnostic:
I don't know and neither do you!). I am quite happy to
talk about God.

Echoing the sentiments of "Mb5_ca" (But this category is called 'Religion and Spirituality'. What else would you have us talk about?), I remind you that some persons are more articulate in text than in person.

For the reasonable mind, the writing of thoughts tends to encourage rational introspection. We may lament that illiberal and unsophisticated people have been given the power of literacy, and we may lament their abuse of that gift, but no ethical person would terminate debate solely on such simple grounds.

Just because people "argue" back and forth doesn't mean that they don't learn things about themselves and about others. Controversy ofter stirs change. I think it is great that people want to talk about subjects that are sometimes considered taboo in the workforce, in school, etc.

Politics and religion banned?

I have three things to say to that: freedom of speech.

If you don't like the arguing that goes on with religious and political discussions, then don't go to that part of the Q&A forum.

But we don't ban free discussion in this country, my friend.

I think when the database is full that Yahoo staff will either perform regular dumps or ban some categories. Either way it just don't matter. Just forget about it!

I think the advantage is not so much to change the other person but to more fully think through and understand and express one's own view. There is where the change is more likely.

Umm...dude, this is America. Freedom of speech, expression, and religion are part of what our country was founded on, and one of the few principles that still stands today. One of my rights is to express my religious beliefs and disagree with someone else's, and if that's how they choose to spend their time, then who are you to judge?
