I quit smoking 3 weeks ago and didn't gain any weight until last week. I found it a bit odd that I gained so much weight because I'd been working out a lot. Is the weight gain due to stopping smoking? Does weight gain happen that long after quitting? Is it temporary? I don't like that my pants won't button.

The same thing happened to me, just keep working out and don't get discouraged. Weight gained is a minor issue compared to the horrible effects of smoking. I went on the South Beach Diet after I gained all of mine and lost the weight very quickly. Good Job and Good Luck!!

People generally gain weight when they quit smoking for two reasons: 1. Smoking does increase your metabolism.. slightly.. so quitting will cause it to drop.
2. People tend to substitute smoking with eating. Most people don't realize how much more they are eating because they tend to pick throughout the day because of boredom... boredom they would have usually cured with smoking.
It is possible that you just didn't notice the weight gain until the last week. And if you have been working out a lot, some of the weight may be muscle(I'm trying to be optimistic here... ) Try to be more conscious of what you are eating. Congratulations on quitting!

Actually it is normal to put on weight after quitting smoking because all that nicotine keeps your body in a perpetual state of overdrive. Wanna drop those pounds? Working out is only part of the equation. Diet will make you or break you. Check out the book "The Abs Diet" from Rodale press, publishers of Men's Health (the diet works for women too) or go to the website http://www.menshealth.com, click on the "Discussions" link, and check out the boards for "The Abs Diet Challenge Club." All kinds of useful information on what to eat, what to avoid, how much you should be eating per day, and yes, they even have a forum for women.

yes weight gain is normal but it is better to be fat than to smoke. The worst thing is to quit smoking, gain weight, and then start smoking again. You can do it! Keep stopping smoking!

well it depends how bad u used to smoke. If you weigh 80 pounds due to smoking, then it's better that you gain some weigh. If you say you work out, then what's your diet? Do you follow up with the diet that your P.T recommends you or you eat something extra outside your diet?

It's not uncommon. A lot of people start munching on snacks after they've quit smoking so that they will have something to do.

Studies have concluded that those who do successfully quit smoking often gain weight. "Weight gain is not likely to negate the health benefits of smoking cessation, but its cosmetic effects may interfere with attempts to quit." (Williamson, Madans et al, 1991) Therefore, drug companies researching smoking-cessation medication often measure the weight of the participants in the study.
