There's a scene in which Jesus is getting the s**t beaten out of him by the Romans, and suddenly Satan appears with a freaky-looking demon child. I'm no Biblical scholar, but I have to say that I don't remember anything like that ever being mentioned in the Bible. What purpose did that scene serve?

The scene is a disturbing version of a demonic madonna and child.

I found this info on the MSN Movies website.

Mel Gibson doesn't truck with pop-cult irony, horror-movie clichés or New Age euphemism in "The Passion of the Christ": He's dead serious when it comes to the Satan who tempts Christ to ditch the whole suffering-for-humankind shtick. It's the hour of the wolf, the air thick with blue mist, when the devil's hooded figure slides into frame to dispatch a little snake of doubt Jesus's way. The androgynous beauty of Lucifer's face is like a death's head scoured of character, compassion -- everything but a taste for carrion. Think of Fellini's Casanova, Bergman's chess-playing Death or a high-fashion model dreaming of food. While Christ is being flogged to a bloody pulp, the devil passes through the watching crowd, hugging a hideous homunculus: a puke-worthy parody of mother and child. The infant demon turns its ancient, wizened face toward Jesus and smiles. It is not a pretty sight.

you're right that the Bible doesn't record Jesus actually seeing Satan and a child. But, the purpose of the scene was to show that what was being done was evil, and that Satan was in the crowd, influencing them to do evil. And I'm sure for the film's purposes, Satan's character was trying to intimidate Jesus with feelings of helplessness, sadness, and abandonment by God.

I don't know anything about Satan, but so far as the whole show goes, I was terribly disappointed, because movies that are supposed to be historic should be realistic.
They must have used a half dozen 55 gallon drums of Hollywood blood in the final scenes. Then to top it off, Longenus stuck his spear in- - - squish, out comes another couple of quarts. It just doesn't happen that way.

the antichrist... devil's counterfeit.

He will appear & rule during the 7 yr tribulation. He will be a charismatic man w/ tremendous diplomatic skills. He will offer a false peace for 7 yrs. He will even have a covenant w/ the Jews & allow them to rebuild the Jewsh Temple. The Jews will even start practicing animal sacrifices again, but then the antichrist will show his true colors & require tht ALL worship him or his image. At some point he will be mortally wounded in the head & heal himself really being indwelt by the devil.

It was a movie. While it was based on Scripture, it never purported to be exactly the same as Scripture.

There were other scenes in the film that are never mentioned in Scripture -- the raven, for instance, who flies down and starts pecking the face of one of the criminals who was crucified along with Jesus. That's not in the Bible.

But "Passion" was much more accurate in its portrayal of the events upon which the fillm was based, than are other movies that are based on true events.

That was satan mocking Mary, Jesus's mother and Jesus. I personally loved the scene when the devil is tempting Jesus in the dessert and it looks like he is going to give in and then suddenly he crushes the snake with his foot.

Well, I think a lot of people see it differently. I personally think that since Satan tempted Jesus in the garden to remove Himself from what He knew was going to happen and run, this was just another way Satan had of trying to remind Jesus that it wasn't too late to run away. Satan played on Jesus' emotions to try to keep Him from dying on the cross. You know Jesus had to be a little frightened about what was about to come. Satan tried to cash in on that.

I am not sure about the whole baby thing either. If anyone does know I would be interested in hearing it. Maybe it represents Satan's soul. I did however like the movie I think for me it made his sacrifice a little more real. To read about it isn't quite as touching as to see it.

I think Satan is laughing at Christ, because Satan thinks he is winning but actually, Jesus is the winner--always. Everytime Satan thinks he is getting one up on God, God reveals that He was actually ahead of the "game." The child, maybe, symbolizes that Satan is trying to win the children of the world????

I saw the movie. Satan was trying every angle to have Jesus denounce god for allowing him to suffer.

Satan was trying to tempt Jesus to end his suffering.

I am not religious... the movie is just an individuals creative interpretation of what Jesus might have experienced.
