The problem is when diplomacy has no affect on an instigator/agitator. How do you negotiate with someone who's agenda is to erradicate you from existence? This is the stated belief of many radical muslims, and not just an extreme few in the shadows, but large powerful, armed militias backed by Iran, Syria, etc.
I understand why people are so anti-war, I hate to hear about innocent lives ended, but I don't see any real alternatives for extremists hellbent on the destruction of others.

war is a way to resolve conflict. Problem is the world, at least the western world, is to politically correct to wage a real all out war against a country or people. To destroy them so bad that they give up, like in WWII. Oh well keeps the news channels busy

Historically, war has been the most popular way to increase a problem not to solve it, and I think the reason is that a war has a huge impact on the economics, actually most of the wars have started because of a territorial problem occasionated by the fight over certain natural resource, so I think that war has been the most efficient way to win political, territorial and economical power, which is something that can't be obtein through the dialogue.

Armies, and wars in general, are needed as a natural part of human evolution. When you look at war from a long-range perspective, it becomes clear that, as destructive as wars are, their very destructiveness has served as the primary force for the evolution of the human race. By mercilessly elimnating those who were unable to survive in the theater of war, wars resulted in a constant upgrading of both the physiological and intellectual acuity of man.

Although many bright people perish in wars, the preponderance of the casualties occur among people with the limited intellectual capacity to understand the mechanics of wars and who are thus unable to avoid becoming casualties.

Who would seriosly dispute the fact that smart people have higher living standards than intellectually less endowed persons do? War elimnates the intellectually less fit and thus, in the end, raises the average intelligence and the living standards of society as a whole.

Throughout the ages, evolution took advantage of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse, war, natural disasters, disease and famine.

If we succeed in eliminating armies and war, we are also eliminating war in its capacity as a powerful contributor to evolution by keeping the world population in check. We are now at 6 billion humans, scientific projections of growth predict 10 billion within 50 years...mostly in under developed countries. Humanity will reach the limits of available resources at 9-12 billion..this is not sustainable.

We can only speculate as to which path evolution will take in reducing the world from 10 to 3 billion. A battle for resources will favor those with higher levels of intelligence and rationality. Evolution never recedes to irrationality, superstition and stupidity.

Apparently war is necessary because Man has always engaged in them. Unfortunately, some grouping of Man will always try to take advantage of another grouping of Man. Then the second grouping is forced to defend themselves.

As long as there are dictators, totalitarians, and religious extremists, there will always be war.

War is seen as the easiest solution to solving problems. Though it is not necessary, people will continue to kill each other. Their can be treaties, agreements, but these would only be short term. Without war, history would be boring. On the plus side, we dont need to worry about overpopulation.

The short answer is "yes". As a former Marine I will tell you no professional soldier wants war, but someone has to keep the wolves at bay and sometimes war is the only solution (WW 2 comes readily to mind)

yes. yes. and possibly. assuming that all people could be democratic and reasonable then yes wars can be avoided. but as you can see, power overrides politics and pride is what leads men to war. if given the opportunity, most people will ascend to power and stay there. if someone were to come along and say you're no longer in power anymore, they will not simply step down willing and say thanks for everything. those who want and obsess over power will not give it to words alone. those who refuse to act reasonably must be treated with often unreasonable tactics. war is a necessary evil in life and cannot be avoided

No it's not, problem is our modern world morality cannot be comprehended by cultures living 500yrs behind us in those values. Unfortunatley we need ' not war like ww2 ' but peace keeping to prevent total wars a sad fact. Also a complex question
