The British Army's discipline regime was drawn up in the 50`s to "sort" out the hangers on after WWII and to train troops for a conventional war against Warsaw Pact countries. They attempted to change rules®s a few times, once in the 80`s (when I joined) and more recently. If anyone in todays army finds discipine too hard then they are obviously not cut out for armed service,as stated before the British Army of today is being softer on recruits because the general caliber of recruits is dropping due to the lack of career prospects.
If you had served in combat then you would accept the bulls**t as this is all geared to make recruits obey orders or carry out tasks quickly and efficiently under duress

The training in the 50's was the best training the British come up with at the time so they decided to keep that particular training. The British soldiers have got to go through the most brutal training there possibly is(they are men with lion hearts). The training is still the same but the British military has gotten smaller over the years but are still the perfessionals of warfare.

The British military has become progressively softer of the last few decades because the recruits are getting softer and more in able to accept simple discipline and rules. The British military was at one point in recent history the most feared fighting force on the planet and we still have the regiments to prove it, but because of the human rights brigade and the softy, softy approach to life now it is in disarray. Can you picture a Hoodie holding an SA80? Squaddie life is piss easy considering on the streets kids run riot with knives and other weapons with complete disregard for common decency!

All three forces need to grow up with regards to rules and regs. I've seen people turned away from a RAF mess, simply for dressing in sporty kit. It's worse on Navy stations, You can't even wear jeans in their "galleys" They need to move into the 20th century, let alone the 21st!. The traditions can stay, as they make up the character of the forces, but the bulls**t can go!

British (only the one t)
I have never been in the Armed Forces and I suspect that many people reading your question have not either. What are these so called retrograde rules that you refer to? Ability to defend in combat, being able to appear spotlessly dressed 24 hrs a day, making the ceremonial aspects of their jobs look easy, which?
