How can you spread cream cheese on a bagel without having it fall thru the middle?

No matter how hard I try, I always end up with a blob of cream cheese in my lap.

Try placing the cream cheese only on the end of the knife before you spread it on the bagel. Then spread in a short circular motion & don't push it all the way to the edge at the center. Take your time.

get a little cream cheese on the end of the knife,
spread the cheese on the body of the bagel,
keep the tip of the knife on the bagel, not over the hole.
if you get some in the hole,
take your finger in the hole and scrape out the cheese
and eat the loose cheese then eat the bagel.

you spread the creamcheese on, then if it is in the middle, before you start eating your bagel, you lick out the creamcheese in the hole. if you don't like that idea, then you just spread it very carefully around the bagel without getting it in the middle. =]
