I have a 7yo son who was diagnosed 3 years ago with mild spectrum autism (aspergers)
kids with related conditions that are mild tend to like activities and interests that involve concentration and not things that involve group activities.
my son likes art activities and also he likes making 3d things too (perhaps with some adult supervision he can make something substantial)
many younger boys do like Thomas the tank engine so that is another idea?

I can't say that I really understand a lot about autism but it seems to me that they tend to be really good and intersted in things like math and problem solving. Somthing like an interesting puzzle or matching game maybe? I would do a little research online, you might find some more specific things. hope this helps

You should ask his mother what some nice things you could get him would be. I think if it's mild he would enjoy and be able to play with toys other boys his age play with, but i don't really know that much about Autism, either.

Most kids with any form of autism have at least a few very strong interests that they love to think about... sometimes a certain TV show, sometimes something like trains or vehicles, a school topic like science or math, or sometimes something totally "out there" like water towers. Find out what the little guy's favorite topic is, and you'll get some ideas as to what to get him!
General things to think about might be a set of magnets (they are fun to click together and pull apart), something he can stare at like one of those little lava-lamp type nightlights or one of those little sand pictures that you can turn over and watch the sand spill down in different patterns (a little guy I worked with loved a giant liquid-filled hourglass we had at his school)..or one of those little keyboards that is like a piano but has different instrument sounds. Good luck!

Autistic kids tend to perseverate on some things. I'd check with his mom to see if she is having trouble getting him to play with a variety of toys. If she is trying to get him to play with something besides trains then it would not be a good idea to get him a train.
If there are no issues like that, then the absolute best toy would be a
DINOSAUR a carnivorous one. He's a boy.

Educational toys, something to stimulate his brain...Leapster I think is a good brand...I would say things that have bright colors...Or look up autism online for appropriate toys.

You can buy a set of mini musical intruments as autistic children usually love music and sounds. If he is into a particular TV character, you might also considering buying him a DVD or book featuring that character.

If he's like my son, who's also autistic, he'll love building sets like Legos, K-Nex, Lincoln Logs, or Magnetix. Puzzles are probably good too.

A toy piano with a variety of rhythms and instrument sounds programed into it should be enjoyable for him.
