I used to have to get up at 6 am to commute to my work. I was always grateful to have my dog wake me up every morning, just in time for me to feed her and get ready to go to work. Recently, however, I got a new job close to home. As a result, I can sleep until later in the morning..but the problem is that my dog, who got used to waking me up at 6am, still tries to do the same. No matter what I do, my dog doesn't seem to understand that I got a new job and that I do not need to wake up so early. Someone, please help me train my dog so I can get some sleep !

I had the same problem, as I was house-training my youngsters, and was careful to get up before there were accidents, at 5:45 each morning...Of course ALL the dogs wanted to go out that early, just cuz I was up...they were very good to wake me at the same time every morning.
But, now I want to get up at 7, so I just refused to get up until 15 minutes later... I tell them its OK, but then ignore them...then the next week, wait another 15 minutes... They do seem to learn new wake up times, if you just begin slowly to increase the wake up time by 15 minute increments.

where does your dog sleep? I would use a crate not in your room depending on the age of the dog. This is quite a dilemma. If you stay up later, keep the dog up later with you. In may take a bit of work, weeks maybe, but the dog will learn that you are not getting up at 6 anymore. The same thing happens because my boyfriend gets up at 5:30 every morning during the week and lets the pups out, then i don't get up until 8 or 8:30 and they are fine that whole time. The problem rolls around on the weekends when I don't plan on getting up at 5:30 and neither does he. We usually find ourselves compromising and getting up around 7 to let them out. but they are pups and have adjusted well. good luck! i know sleep is super important

for about 3 days to a week lock ur dog out of the room u sleep in and wake him up at the time u get up(the NEW time) after that week past by let him back in the room during the night. If he still wakes u up at the too early time, then scold him for doing so and at the time when u want up set him on the bed and reward him.

hope it helps me sisters dog did about the same thing.

you need to gradually retrain her into waking up at another time. I would start by getting up 5 min's before she does with an alarm clock. Then gradually start waking up later. by beginning to wake your dog up it will get use to this concept first. Then as you keep on adding time then the dog will add time as well by not really knowing the difference. My dog does the same thing right on the dot down to the second every morning she wakes me up. or it can eventually get use to it on it's own. My dog got use to it when I had to work night and days. thank god i don't have to do that anymore though.

Possibley make his feeding time earlier. Like if you wake up in the early morning to use the bathroom feed him then and go back to bed? Lock him in another room for a week, maybe you will break his habit like that?

You need to train her. She doesn't understand about your new job. Put her someplace where she won't be able to wake you in the morning, and then when you get up, feed her etc. like you did before. She will soon get the idea.

Used to have the same problem with my 11 little dog-children. There is nothing you can do except stay in bed and let your dog get used to you sleeping in. It will take some time, but he/she will eventually get used to your new hours.
