It is a long and complicated problem. You really have to know some history to understand it. The Jewish people have had a presence in the Holy Land since Biblical time. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Arabs came into the area but they were mostly nomadic tribes. The old Biblical cities crumbled and it became a desert. There is no oil on this land. Following the holocaust in WW2, the UN decreed that Israel would once again be the Jewish homeland and Jordan was established at the same time. No one has ever protested Jordan's right to the land.
The Israelis irrigated the land and soon had thriving farms, businesses and universities. When the Arabs saw this they demanded the land.
Israel has done everything it could to keep the peace. They gave up chunks of their territory and even bulldozed their own settlements and turned the land over to the Palestinians. But the suicide bombers kept coming in and the missiles were still being fired into Israel. As a last resort, they even built a wall to keep out terrorists but that didn't work either. Now the terrorists have kidnapped Israeli soldiers and continue to bombard them with missiles. Nothing will satisfy them except the destruction of Israel. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and is surrounded on all sides by countries that allow terrorists to control them, the same terrorists that attacked us, Britain, India and other countries. Israel has a right to defend itself. They are doing what we should be doing -- destroying terrorist headquarters and training grounds.

After the 1967 war, Israel occupied land which belonged to Palestine in the West Bank and the Gaza strip. The Palestinians want the land back. The US supports the Israeli occupation, which continues in violation of United Nation Security Council Resolution 242.
