I asked a simple question about hand washing in public restrooms (I didn't use any specific examples...I was asking strictly for etiquette's sake.) and got flamed by at least 4 or 5 people. What the hell is wrong with people???

Thanks for all the answers so far. I'm not letting these answers "get to me"...I've been known to give some pretty harsh answers too, but mine are ALWAYS in reference to something I feel very strongly about, and is worth arguing (abortion, for example)...NOT hand washing. Are these people seriously so wound up that a question on handwashing is going to set them off and send them over the deep end? Hah! That's funny, yet sad at the same time...

I have asked the same Q in a different more specific way.
My own answer is that the hostility often emerges in conjunction with Ignorance, Immaturity --intellectual, psychological, and spiritual, and stupidity. Supported by a lousy inadequate educational experience and parents who probably suffered from the same defects and passed them on to their children.
Personally, I am tired of running into such hostility in the forum. It is intellectually pointless. It may be a sign of pathological narcissism in the answerers who derive pleasure from the activity: A sign of the times in which so many behave self-destructively.

Contrary to the opinion of some respondents, the Quality of the asked Q, however poorly asked, is no justification for the hostlity and disrespect evident in some of the the Answers.

People are hostile because it works for them. It's a way to protect themselves from being taken advantage of. Some just lash out, thinking they're funny or cute. Some just want to stir up trouble. Some had a bad hair day. You know, there's more reasons for hostility than anyone can come up with. And if you ask the persons who had the "witty" remarks, they'll give you more hostility. It's best just to throw your question out there and accept the fact that you're going to get at least one smart butt answer, even with the simplest of questions. I do notice that some questions get a little more static than others, especially when the one answering feels that their privacy has been violated. It's best to keep your questions to a minimum and keep them as general as possible. I've gotten slammed by some of the answers I've given, but since the written word leaves out so much expression, there's no way to help people see the whole story. Don't take the "flames" so seriously. They gotta do what they gotta do. It will drive you nuts trying to figure out what drives people sometimes. And with the price of gas nowdays, I try to keep it to a minimum! <*)))><

some people are put out easily, some just may be having a bad day, some unfortunately are just mean spirited and sunshine blown up their skirt wouldn't make them any nicer. They go in the catagory of don't give them a second thought! The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked! Keep on searching for knowledge!

It just depends on the question in general. People are different, and some questions may not be simple to others. Best bet is just dont ask anything out of the oridinary unless you feel comfortable around that person. People are just wierd and you never know when they may snap.

I read through the answers to the question you mention, and (except for maybe one of them) I didn't find them to be "hostile" or "flaming" at all.
You asked if it would be rude to ask a stranger in a public restroom to wash his/her hands ... and several people answered that it would be rude to do that.
That's all.
That doesn't mean they were being "hostile" to you.

I looked at the question and the answers, they didn't seem that hostile. I think you are overreacting a bit. Do you want to see flamed replies? have a look at Yahoo! discussion boards on the news.

People are cynical and sarcastic and their mothers never taught them better. Etiquettly speaking, you are supposed to wash your hands after going to the restroom. If you just went in to fix your hair or make up, you don't have to unless you feel dirty. You can use up to five towels (after that, it is just wasteful) and unless your hands are really dirty, only one squirt of soap should do.

My guess would be they are scared little introverted boys who are afraid in public so act brave behind the safety of their computers. Others just have such sad little lives that they simply get their kicks insulting people for no reason.
Ignore them, they're just pathetic.
