In the book of Proverbs (Bible, Old Testament) it is written that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. In my understanding of that text it's talking about how in order for a human to know anything about God or any of the Big questions of life. One must first acknowledge that all things came from God and can be taken away by that God.

Here is something else to ponder - You may have seen something like this before: Ignorance=fear=hate. 1: Ignorance, in order to learn anything we must first be willing to admit that we are truly ignorant of it. 2: When we start to learn just how powerful God is we should fear that awesome power. The way we fear getting shocked by electricity, yet we know just how much good electricity plays in our world. 3:Hate, when Jesus walked the earth many of the people in power hated Him because he taught such a radical thing: that there is a power greater than any human power. That power, God has the ability to bring people back for the dead just as He did with Jesus and death was the final power that any human ruler back then or today can use to keep people in check and all of a sudden these Christ was going around preaching that God can raise the dead and that a new kingdom, a new power was here that they could not control by force. These rulers would not admit their ignorance of that new kingdom so they never came to fear God or know Him.

No, well at least not in Islam. It is the exact opposite. He wants you to love him and remember him. He wants you to remember that He loves you as well and He has your best interest at heart. He wants you to remember all these good things He gave you in this life. So just follow his word. He is ever so merciful and kind.

He does not need your fear. Hitler needed fear in his public's heart to keep his control. God already has ultimate control (otherwise He is not God) and His control is not dependent on your hating Him, loving Him, or fearing Him.

Proverbs 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."

The word translated "fear" comes from the Hebrew word "yirah," which means "extreme reverence, dread, extreme fearfulness" (Strong's Hebrew Dictionary). The idea is one of really being afraid in the presence of a holy, all-powerful God. In the Old Testament, people confronted with the presence of God fell on their faces and shook in actual fear.

When we really see ourselves clearly in the light of who God is, we will truly be afraid.

In the New Testament we are told that "in Christ" we can approach the throne of God's grace "with confidence." We can stand before God only through the blood of Jesus Christ, which cleanses us from all sin.

You are comparing two different definitions of fear.

According to Merriam-Webster:

3 : to have a reverential awe of
4 : to be afraid of

So, the answer to your question is, yes, God really wants you to fear Him.

If we're talking OT Yaweh, then yes, fear. Christians and Mulsims alike will try to update the meaing to fit with what they want God to be. But in the OT, he's a bully, an azzhole, and deserving of your fear.

I think most people overrate the word fear. Fearing Jesus or God is like fearing your parents. You knew they were liable to punish you if you disobeyed them What we have for God is a reverent awsome fear, not of him, but the total power he has. It is not a terrified fear, if you know and love God.

To "fear" God means to reverence and respect Him.

It is not FEAR as in being afraid of a monster..
It is fear as being in reverance and respect for who God is. That knowing you will be justly treated for your deeds, good and bad.
