There are so many to pick from! The best thing I could ever recommend to a new cook is to pick up "The New Best Recipe" cookbook -- from the publishers of Cook's Illustrated magazine. It's a marvelous, basic cookbook that doesn't get too crazy with its recipes, and, best of all, goes into the science of cooking. So much of cooking is intuitive, and understanding the "why" of a recipe is the key to becoming a really good cook.
