It is odd to us. But everyone has there own beliefs. it is not up to us to judge there is only one true living god. And there will come time when all is revealed to the world. have faith and love one another is what Jesus would like us all to do. I think that other religions are very interesting study some and you will words of wisdom in everything. Be knowledgable and ask f God for guidance and you will receive it. Faith, Love, and Charity and the greatest of them all is Love.

What do you use to deceive yourself? Friends, only hanging out with the kind of people who agree with you and stroke your ego perhaps? Never tell you when you are being an ***? Money? Do you buy your stairway to heaven and is the striving to be rich your religion, your distraction or your creed? Does your girlfriend or boyfriend prop you up and place you high on their list of things to do... between the gym and work? Would you be all too happy to sit at their feet and rub tanning lotion all over their golden skin in the sun? What is your idol? Are they false or are they true?
I think people in India know perfectly well what they are doing. It is called keeping things in perspective via an in-adamant object as a representation of the God they adore as opposed to the millions of things we as American believers and non believers bow down to and worship every day... Ever pray to your Ipod or your cell phone? Well I'm sure in the very least, they get loads of attention from you... Don't they? One man's meat is another man's poison!
I have always loved the audacity of one man, one little insignifficent voice that tries to challenge the belief system of an ENTIRE CULTURE of people from a rather large region of this world.
I do not believe I NEED those images to reach God and do you think that they would lose sight of their faith if the statues were destroyed like they did in Tibet? I see Orange robed Tibetan priests in Target and Walmart all the time!
I have lots of religious statues in my home, for decoration though. God has many faces, all over the world but I think He exists within the ardent good intentions of the indivisual. Who are you? What is your Demi -God? and don't say you don't have one, because you do... Your Car perhaps?

Discipline is built in different forms,
Hindus believe while they; build the statue, they bring in the super powers through the mantras and Vedas, and believe they are blessed when they do the poojas to the deity.
Every one pray to get peace, wealth, and health which ever they are in need of. Even if they are not blessed immediately they wait hoping one day they will be blessed, actually this belief make them wait patiently which avoids unwanted fight between people, allows them from getting into unwanted habits.
Actually it is like how we now, today have the towers through which we are linked to people throughout the world with the help of satellite, likewise, these idols help people who truly believe in God, when we meditate, u get these powers to even communicate without towers, are the reason why people in India worship idols.
It is only the Muslim community in the world who do not do idol worshiping.

Let me share some wisdom with you about these "idol worshippers" in India. I recieved this from my daily Hindu wisdom newsletter, just today.
"The sages call it Akshara, the Imperishable. It is neither big nor small, neither long nor short, neither hot nor cold, neither bright nor dark, neither air nor space. It is without attachment, without taste, smell, or touch, without eyes, ears, tongue, mouth, breath, or mind, without movement, without limitation, without inside or outside. It consumes nothing, and nothing consumes it.
In perfect accord with the will of the Imperishable, sun and moon make their orbits; heaven and earth remain in place; moments, hours, days, nights, fortnights, months, and seasons become years; rivers starting from the snow-clad mountains flow east and west, north and south, to the sea."
-Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
doesn't sound like to me that they are under the influence of darkness; they have their own Gods and Goddesses, and they work for them. Beliefs work because of the will of the believer. They are not decieving themselves. The idols they use are their link to that which is Divine. They are not blind. And what would you say if I told you that our Divine Creator needn't be living, that it is formless, an energy-being? And too, why should any belief be profitable? So it can be sold to the masses, for their weekly tithe?
You understand not what you ask. Seek to know.
Blessed Be.

Idols are not god. They are a means to concentrate and meditate. God will occur to any one who is believer in goodness to human being and all the creatures around in the world. Idols make it easier for Hindus to repose faith in the Supreme Power

Yeah, maybe they should just listen to the words of a book written a couple thousand years ago by a bunch of maniacs running around in the desert.
That makes a lot more sense.

Your question suggests that you have never tried to ask this to someone one literate in true sense. So here it goes. As we know god is something without form. A normal human cannot experience this form of god. Only a select few get this opportunity. To reach to this form one needs to first understand the limited version of god. That is the god with some form. It is similar to climbing steps. To reach to the top floor you need to first reach the first floor.
I hope you understand

To the Christian belief, they are doing as you describe. Personally, I think all religions are actually the same God/diety just in a different form to appeal to different people. Just like Coca Cola has a ton of products for people in the US, and internationally, but they are all still the Coca Cola company, I think that is how religion works. That is my personal opinion of it.

Has anyone told them any different. You know the old saying about the bird in hand?
If they were raised to believe whatever religion. They will stick with that unless they have a compelling reason to give it up.

It is only a symbol meant to represent the Idea of the god, not the god itself, they understand this. It was the desert peoples who had to have the ban in place because they could not tell the difference between a lump of clay and God.
