Nowhere in the constitution. Some old document (Tripoli treaty, I think) says that America is not even a Christian nation.

It was not founded on "christian values" it was founded on American ideals. No where in bible or any church teaching does it say all men are equal, etc. American laws were based off of ENGLISH laws and magna carta as schools have taught for a very long time.
The whole argument that America was based on christian values is very flawed as our basic structure came from EUROPEAN societies and thinkers which we, in turn, elevated to the next level by ourselves.
Now you can try to say European society was based on christian values and that would be totally wrong too since all of Christianity is based on pagan religions and Europe was evolving long before Christianity came along. However, let's say it is...is it any coincidence that Europe became more and more peaceful the more secular they became and the less temporal power the christian religion had over laws and policy? I think NOT!
PS> for the "America based on the 10 commandments" sayers I respond with this. There is only 2 of the Commandments that is are America laws and that is "Do not Steal" and "Do not Kill". All other Commandments are not laws in America so that whole theory is a big ball of flaming wrongness.

Hey PL. it says 86% believe in God but WHICH God? Also the Founders believed in slavery and so did the bible so we should have that right? And as for the God on money and in the pedge of alligence they were added a long, long, long time after the US was setup as a free nation and was not done by the founding fathers.

Why did they make out a country of religious freedom?

Because they left a country without religious freedom.

The roman Catholic Church ruled the church and the government and left no room for any other thought.

So, our founding fathers, wanting the freedom to worship as they chose, knew others would want that same freedom, even the Catholics.

This is basic history of how and why the people took off on the long and dangerous journey to get here. They treasured the fact that they could now worship as they chose, and had no interest in ruling with an iron thumb.

They based their thoughts directly from the bible, and made up the first sets of laws directly from the bible, but stopped short of requiring everyone to pledge allegience to the bible, as that would make them the very thing that they had ran away from, oppressors.

This did not mean to them, that someday we would require all biblical references to be removed from the government, but it is what is happening.

This country was built on biblical principals, not ways of worship, but we seem to have forgotten that part.

Freedom, you answered your own question.
Very specifically separating church and state. Just because the founding fathers were Christians have nothing to do with them forming a Christian country. They were smart enough to realize that what was good for them wouldn't necessarily be good for everyone and everyone has the freedom of choice.
Possibly they didn't feel the need to knock what others would believe but to accept everyone to have the freedom of choice. Too bad there aren't more people like that now huh?

It was founded by people who wanted to practice their own religion. Yes, they were Christian, but the whole point of them coming here was for freedom. It would have been pointless for them to declare this a Christian Country. They knew how important it was to them that they be able to follow whatever religion they wanted to and they wanted that for any other person who came over. The Constitution isn't based on religion. It is based on the rights that the founders wanted to ensure everyone could have. Do a little basic research on second grade history. Not everything is about Christianity and not everything is the fault of religion or lack there of. This country is about freedom and respect for beliefs among other things.

Study some history. One of the big reasons for people coming to America was to escape religious persecution by the English Monarchy where you were punished if you did not follow the Church of England. So when the founding fathers, whose families escaped this persecution, formed this country, they didn't want to have the same persecution here, so they didn't make it a church based government.
It doesn't say any of the religious terms of god, jesus, christian, christianity or the bible anywhere because they are not wanting to tie it to any religion. The Declaration of Independence does say "The Creator" which is an obvious allusion to God.

I am a radical Christian but i am sooo very glad that the founding fathers did not make this a christian country. The fact that their home country was FORCING religion was probably the deciding factor. This is a nation where all are free to explore their beliefs. You have the freedom to be a christian or whatever else you desire.

"As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion..."
--From Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli 1797. Unanimously ratified by the U.S. Senate and signed by President John Adams.

For some reason people always seem to think that this country was founded on Christianity. They like to say: "The Constitution is based on the Ten Commandments." Let me ask you, isn't it obvious that any rational country would have laws like: no killing, no stealing, etc.? But since these are our rational laws, we obviously copied off of Christianity. Not like other people had laws like: no killing, no stealing, etc. before the Ten Commandments were written right?

We made it religious freedom because what can we do? Make people be christians? No it doesnt work that way. It doesnt say God or Jesus in the constitution but the laws are based off of the ten commandments.

The founding fathers made this a country of religious freedom because several groups (such as the Quakers) came to the US to escape religious oppression. John Adams was a Unitarian, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were Episcopalian, the list goes on about all their differing denominations. Each denomination holds a different set of beliefs and they all wanted to practice their own religion so why would they found a country on just one belief when they all held varying beliefs?

James Madison, the fourth president, known as "The Father of our constitution" made the following statement:

" We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God"

Patrick Henry, the patriot and Founding Father of country said:

" It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ".

The very first Supreme Court Justice, John Jay said:

"AMERICANS SHOULD SELECT AND PREFER CHRISTIANS AS THEIR RULERS"

How have we gotten to the point that everything we have done for 220+ years in this country is suddenly wrong and uncostitutional???

It is said that 86% Americans believe in God! Therefore it is HARD to understand why there is such a mess about having the Ten Commandments on display (As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S. Supreme Court, you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing forward full frontal view...It is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments!) or "in God we trust" on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance....
WHY DON'T WE JUST TELL THE OTHER 14% TO SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!!!!

No wonder why Thomas Jwfferson worried that the Courts would overstep their authority and instead of intrepreting the law, they begin making the law. a oligarchy.
THE LAW OF FEW OVER MANY.
