I'm a 13D I just got denied some opportunity training because for some reason my security clearance wasn't up to date. My chief didn't tell me any more than that. I don't know if I was supposed to do something or if somebody else screwed up. What is this security clearance stuff.

Depending you your duty position you may need to be eligible for access to classified material at a certain level. Usually, the Army front-loads people for security clearances by making it a requirement for specific MOS's.

Otherwise selected people will be investigated and cleared if they are given specific assignments that require a clearance.

There are two 'basic' level clearance that people can hold: Secret and Top Secret (a person with a 'basic' Secret or Top Secret clearance may get additional accesses based on their job).

A Secret clearance is generally good for 10 years and a Top Secret expires after 5 years.

If you have a clearance you will know it because of the mass of paperwork you have to complete prior to getting your background investigation started.

What the hell is a "13D"? If you need a security clearance to perform your assigned duties, you will have one. You can't get one just because you think it sounds cool to have a 'secret' or a 'top secret' clearance.
ps. or a CONFIDENTIAL clearance, (3 levels)

If you had a security clearance with the military you would already know "what this security clearance stuff" was.
If you don't you have no need to know about it.
