If someone who knew about Tokyo described it to you, but you'd never been there personally, would you believe them? If they commissioned artists, authors, etc. to portray the city, wouldn't it be accurate at least to a reasonable degree?

This is why Christians make specific claims about Hell. They've been "told" by God in His Word, so they try to accurately portray what's been revealed to them about Hell. I can't speak for all of the other adherents to other religions, but I know that Christians (should and usually do) try to portray Hell in a manner consistent with the way it's described in the Bible.

It really is all based on people interpretation of the bible and influences from Dante's inferno and other literature. The only thing that all these book have in common is that they are all works of FICTION. There is no hell it is just a method used by the religious conservatives to brainwash their poor children into doing what they want "do touch yourself johnny you'll go to hell". It is a made up place although some can argue hell is the view from your front door.

Yes, it's dumb. I think too many people are trying to make money off of people's beliefs.
I believe in Hell, but not as a place of torment.
A loving God would not make a place full of torment where He sends all His children who do not worship Him. I am a Christian, but I don't buy into that whole thing. Some parts of the Bible are to be taken literally, while others have physical meaning, and yet others are multidimensional like God. He speaks on so many different levels. That's why you can read the Bible and get so many different meanings out of it. I mean, I don't believe that Hell is all fire and torment any more than I believe that Jesus's feet are really made of brass. God speaks in metaphors just like people do. Why do you think there are so many different terms for Hell...the lake of fire, the abyss, etc. They're all symbolistic terms for Hell, a way of saying that you're cast out, or separated. But I believe that, even in Hell, you have a second chance...Even Jesus went there to teach the souls there what He taught us here on Earth. It's not over until Judgement Day.

No, it's pointless to be angry.

After all, look how many people believe that heaven is full of angels playing harps and floating around on puffy, white clouds.

People mentally create what they believe what heaven and hell will look like, because we are a label-oriented society. We're not happy unless we can compartmentalize everything. Doing that makes people feel comfortable with the concepts they have created.

No, I never mind it. I kind of prefer Dante's Inferno to the generic Fire Pit most people believe.

Why be angered....especially when you realize that they have never been there so they can't possibly describe what it looks like. And the only reason some preachers describe it so colorfully is so they can scare the bejesus out of you and make you submit to their way of thinking.

I get angered by people trying to push the ridiculous concept of Hell on me.
But, their description of something that doesn't exist is actually quite entertaining.

I have learned not to be irritated by what other people believe, and they fantasies on a particular subject. If someone is trying to sell me a lie, I will correct them, but it's not worth getting upset over. There is so many better things we can do with our time.

Hell is not a terrible place--Jesus was in hell for three days and was then resurrected out of hell back to life in heaven.
Did you know that hell will soon be gone forever? The Bible makes it clear in Revelation that hell is the common grave of mankind and Jesus has the keys to hell in order to resurrect all those who have died and gone there__" And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire--So death will be no more and hell will be no more for without death, hell ( or graves) will not be needed.
( Revelation 20: 13,14) Revelation 1:18 states: " I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I (Jesus) am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." So this tells us that those brought back to life who were in hell(the grave) will then be judged by how they respond to God's rulership. God's Word assures us that once we die, our sins are wiped out; "For the wages of sin is death--" Romans 6:23 __Yes,when a person dies, they have paid for all sins. By resurrecting those who have died, they are given a second chance to prove their loyalty to God and to his Son,our reigning King.
