Get into what you are learning, find out cool facts about it, remember that you have to pay attention. Focus on the teacher, soon you'll get into the calss, and time will fly.

It all depends on your learning style, and what you mean by "your work at school" But it sounds like you might be easily distracted. Try writing down anything and everything your teacher writes on the board, that might help you stay on focus. You might actually ask your teacher to change your seat so that you are not sitting around people you want to visit with.
When I was in school I couldn't even understand anything the teacher said in a lecture unless I was doing something else with my hands (like drawing a picture) I got in trouble alot, unless the teacher took the time to see that I did better that way then the way they tend to like it. (All quiet and still)
These days they call it a learning disability.
As an adult I am a great multitasker, (I do lots of things all at the same time) so just keep trying to find what works for you.

First of all congradulation for trying to improve yourself.

Here are a set of thoughts.
1. Set goals for yourself. Long term and short term. Write them down somewhere that you will see them and think about them. Consider how better grades may help you in acheveing your goals.

2. Make school work your priority and allow for free time once school work is done. Get into that mind set and then the sooner you get your work done the sooner you can spend some free time doing the thinks you like to do. But don't rush your work.

3. If it's more of a major problem than a small issue ask your parents to have yourself tested for ADD or ADHD. My son had ADHD and once he got on medication he made a 180 degree turn on his grades to the better.

But the goal setting really needs to be the first thing you do no matter what becuase otherwise it's just homework getting in the way of what you really want to do. Once you start to recognize what your going to get out of it in the end, then it may become more important to you where you make it a priority. Good grades are no gaurantee but you can't get into a good college or get a good job later on with out them.

Best of Luck and keep trying.

Omega fish oils are amazing, i use them to help me concentrate at work and at college, they take about a week to start working properly but when they do, i find they really help.
Read the label to find out how many a day you should take, they are also usually quite cheap.

Hope this helps.
