I'm working on a documentary about Alcoholics Anonymous, and I am looking for someone to comment on the genetic part of alcoholism.

They've been looking for the "alcoholic gene" for quite some time and haven't found it.

Maybe there is a gene (or a combination of genes) that makes a person more likely to develop a problem, but no one becomes physically addicted to alcohol without drinking in quantity over a period of time.

Of course, by "alcoholic", I mean physically addicted, not the AA version which is someone who has been "saved" by AA or is still drinking.

I am a recovered alcoholic 8 yrs.Your question is moot. There is no alcoholic genetic link, there is only self-control.Whether through a higher power or counseling it really makes no difference in the long run.5% recover through A.A. 5% recover through other methods. The real key is to be around others going through the same problems and to find a way to deal with them, which is why we become alcoholic in the first place(inability to deal with life and social situations.
